Kevin nodded. A gift card would probably be good. Then Toby could get something he actually wanted--oooh, or that. "We could go out to pizza or ice cream or that arcade!" Kevin started to smile.
"I'll go buy this," he said, and headed over to the clerk.

"I think he'd like that," Dari said. "Alright." He followed Kevin to the front of the store, strolling casually and enjoying the fact that he could do this now without a ton of makeup. He savored the general scent of the town and smiled.

Kevin bought his card and headed outside. "C'mon Dari, let's go look at other stuff!" Was the person he cared about most the hardest to shop for because he cared so much?

Gingerbread was a sort of hit-or-miss deal. It worked just fine for the more mature palates, but some people just didn't like it. Dari seemed to like it, but Dari also seemed to like the experience of most things regardless of whether he actually liked the taste of them. As such, Toby was sitting back and eating the scrap pieces of cookie that hadn't made it into the actual shape of the houses.
"Gah!" Dari said, and laughed. He was struggling to keep the roof together as he worked with Cody. Toby smiled. It was harder than it looked.
Michael meanwhile seemed to be holding the other house together quite firmly without even looking at it.
"I think maybe you missed your calling as a baker," Toby said to the ghost. Michael smiled up at him and then returned to piping the panes of a window.
"How are you doing that?" Dari asked, too giddy to hold back.
"Magic," Michael replied, not looking up from his window, "It's just something I can do."

Even if their house was falling apart--at least without Dari's help, Cody was throughly enjoying himself. He was grinning as he piped a door onto the house, and then a window. "Don't let it fall in," he teased Dari. "The poor gingerbread people will get snow inside their house!"
Kevin was delighted. Granted, he was also eating a few of the gumdrops. "You're awesome, Michael," he complimented the ghost. His piping was a lot messier than Michael's, but he didn't seem to mind getting frosting on his hands.

"Well they won't fit through that door!" Dari said. He was only teasing, though, and used his sticky fingertips to try and hold the peak together while the icing dried. "Are these easier if they're not home-made?"
"Nope," Toby said, and popped a shard of gingerbread into his mouth.
"What should we put on the roof?" Michael asked Kevin. He didn't expect their house to be particularly pretty, but that wasn't the point. It was the fun and the family of it. It always had been. He finally wasn't worried about imposing.

Kevin held up a handful of gumdrops, offering some to Michael. "Let's put these on it!" He said. "Ooh, and made some licorice... that could be garland or something!" Kevin used his free hand to pop a string of licorice into his mouth.
"I can't help if they're giant gingerbread people!" Cody laughed. "My mom and I used to make them with grahamn crackers when I was little. They'd always fall and we'd eat them."

"I did that when I was a kid too," Toby said amusedly to Cody. "Kevin, you like licorice? People your age usually don't."
"No?" Michael asked. "Well, I suppose there are a lot more sweets nowadays, and they're much sweeter. Can we have hot cocoa again?"
"Of course," Toby agreed.
Michael smiled to him and then went about adhering his window. Then he took a handful of gumdrops and a cold breeze passed Kevin and lighted on his skin, and the spirit began to glue the drops on.

"It's not my favorite," Kevin said, after chewing thoughtfully. It was...strange. Different from other sweets. "How long have graham crackers been around, then?" He asked. He looked to Michael. "Did you make gingerbread houses when you were alive?"
The cool breeze surprised him. But he was still smiling. "Hey! Come help," he gestured for Toby to come over. "Tomorrow we get to open presents!"

"I don't think licorice is anyone's favorite," Toby said with a smile, but as he came to help Kevin he popped a piece into his mouth anyway. Then: "I'm not sure."
"Neither am I," Michael said. He had faded away from the waist down. Toby sat beside him to help shingle the roof with gumdrops.
"These might be too heavy to hold," Toby said.
Dari meanwhile had since gotten his and Cody's roof to stand up and was working on the back end, away from Cody. "Could I have a couple green gumdrops?"

Apparently they were really old, then. Michael knew everything, and even he didn't know! "We'll have to ask Google." He offered Toby a handful of candy. "Then it'll fall in and we can eat it," Kevin decided, and grinned.
"Sure," he said, and gave Dari several green gumdrops. "Yours looks really good, Dari!"

Dari took the gumdrops and began to decorate their house's back yard. "Thanks."
Toby popped another candy in his mouth (this one tasted like off-brand Smarties) and began helping to decorate. He wasn't necessarily the most hip on aesthetics, but he tried.
"Well, that's why you make them the day before," Toby said, "So they aren't stale on Christmas and you can still eat them."

"That's really smart," Kevin said, with a smile. Eating gingerbread houses on Christmas while they opened presents! "Then it'll still be good!" He tried one of the candies, made a face, and hurriedly swallowed it. "Yuck! That was sour."
Cody kissed Dari's cheek. "I think I'm done," he announced.

"You like licorice, but not sour things?" Toby asked. Nobody really knew how old Kevin was, but they were pretty sure he wasn't as old as the peak of licorice popularity. "Gimmee that." He snacked a sour candy and popped it in his mouth, then half-grinned at Kevin. He did enjoy teasing the kid. It was different than when Dari had been young. It was, pardon his thought, almost normal.
"Already?" Dari asked. He then hovered over Cody's snowman, mouth open, threatening to eat it without a word. His eyes locked on Cody's, wide.

"How can you eat that?" Kevin asked, a mix between horrorified and impressed. He offered Toby a piece of licorice.
Cody picked up the snowman and put it in Dari's mouth. He was smirking. "You'll have to make another one," he teased.
