Arian_X hello.I play the tenor sax(3rd year curetly) and the Clarinet(5th year currently) and I just started Bari a month ago. I was just wondering if some one could give me some advice as being new to the Bari and a few extra tips on my tenor. -currently having troubling hitting the really low notes. -I would also appriciate some tips on improving my tone oh! and vibrato. Low notes are always hard, just practice. Oh and use lots of air. You can never use too much air.

Don't bother with vibrato until your have a clean and even straight tone. Get someone with a good ear to see if your long tones even waver a little bit here and there. It's good to get an impartial opinion, because it's sometimes hard to hear your own mistakes.
If you don't wait, you'll start using vibrato to hide a weak straight tone. That leads to a sloppy vibrato.

Like chicken_waltz said, since you're playing bari the only time you're using too much air is when the director tells you to back off. Until that point just keep blowing harder. Sometimes it's easier to play low notes if you drop your jaw just a touch, play around with that a little. As far as tone, pay attention to your mouth. That, of course, is always very important. Keep it firm, your chin flat, and don't puff your cheeks. Always keep a solid stream of air. That's all basics. Once you've got that down, check out some different mouthpieces, ligatures, and reeds. They can all change your tone immensely.

The key to fixing a lot of common sax problems is developing your emouchure. The ideal shape of your mouth when it's set and pressure is applied to the reed and mouthpiece is a circle. Often times the sides of the mouth are under developed, especially in clarinet doublers like me. Once you learn to support the lips better and open your throat, the low notes should pop out nicely. Don't try to put in a little air before hitting those, though, because you would have already opened the register key or something. Instead, push the air in one strong blow, being sure the air is 'aimed' all the way through to the end of the bell. I haven't played bari sax yet, but the Leblanc silver contrabass clarinet I was repairing is a 5th lower, and uses a much stronger reed (wider AND thicker, but not as long, I believe) and has a much narrower bore throughout the instrument. That means theres more chances for air to escape with an undeveloped emouchure. Let me post a recording of me on the contra to give you a feel.

DemonicCurse I play alto sax. All saxophone have the same fingerings so you could play almost any of them if you could play just one. Yep too true. I play Alto Bari and Tenor. I play Alto and Tenor during our Marching Season (it just depends what my director wants me on ^.^) and Bari during concert season. It is difficult at first to go from an alto to a bari but only a little bit.

Another thing you can try is to think that you're always pushing the same amount of air, regardless of register, you're just using your throat to control the speed of that air.

It took me like five to ten minutes to go from one to the other. Now I can do it without really thinking about it. biggrin

That's very good. It's a calling card of an efficient doubler.

Omggg! Has anyone heard of Cannonball Adderly? He's an alto sax player. In jazz band for our final we had to do a report on a jazz musician that plays our instrument and listen to music they did. OMG this guy is so cool. The fast chord progressions are aaaaaaawesooooome!!! I wanna play like that! crying

He's hard bop. : ) That generally means some insane soloing over a simple head.
I love cannonball. My favorite song of his is by far, Sack of Woe.

I like that one too. Joe Zawinul wrote it for the quintet. Have you heard the live recording from The Club? That's the one that starts with him preaching about "adversity."
I saw a jazz band arrangement for it used by another highschool. It made me feel kinda sick. They basically turned it into a rock song. It's such a mellow song. Why would they do that?
Btw, have you heard Cannonball Adderley plays Fiddler on the Roof? I got a copy of the album a few months ago. It's pretty bizarre. Good, but bizarre.
Another album of his I have is the one recorded with Miles, called Somethin' Else. They do a surprisingly slow Autumn Leaves.
