Lin smiled, "We can wait, we're not in a hurry."
She was glad he was happy this time, and was actually enjoying what he was doing.
Kali slid into the seat next to Andarien.
"So... where were we?"

"Materials that are used to collect energy from the sun," Andarien reminded Kali. They were looking at ways of collecting and using solar energy to power things.
Earendil smiled and put one arm around Lin's shoulders. It was nice seeing Andarien enjoying something for once. Sometimes it seemed as if there was little that he really enjoyed, but he seemed to be really at home here.

"Ah... right," Kali nodded, "As I was saying, Gaia uses chemical processes to capture the heat and energy of the sun and covert it into energy, but there are more natural resources that do this normally. For example, plants feed themselves by converting the sun's energy, and they're very good at doing that. There are other materials, like certain stones and crystals, but they don't do it as well.... at least not any that have been found so far."
She mused on this a bit before continuing.
"Even the chemical processes we have need to be helped along a bit. Like using reflectors to direct more sunlight, or having the device turn with the sun, or even as you notice the traditional models are black because black absorbs a lot of sunlight."
Though Kali had been working on that so black wasn't required because black leaves was not going to look that nice on the grounds.

Andarien nodded. Earendil was confused - all of what he heard went over his head - but it seemed to make sense to Andarien, which, he supposed, was the point of having him learn from Kali in the first place.
The lessons continued for a bit longer, until Andarien felt he'd learned enough - after all, when would he have the occasion to use this knowledge practically? - and at last he was ready to go.
Or at least, as ready as he was going to get.
"Thanks for teaching me, Aunt Kali," he beamed up at his aunt. "I learned a lot from you!"

"It was a pleasure to teach you," Kali replied in turn, "It's not often I get someone who can keep up."
Sure, she toned it down for Andarien, but he still grasped it a lot better than most people she knew. The only others she could think off the top of her head that would have gotten it was the neko trio.

"And it's not often I get someone who teaches good things," Andarien grinned back at her. "It's always really hard stuff, like ... like katas and stuff!"
Earendil didn't want to think about how backwards that sounded to him. To him, physical training - any training - would be easier than what Kali was teaching Andarien. He hadn't understood a word of it.
But Andarien was unique that way.
He cleared his throat to get Andarien's attention, and Andarien hugged Kali around her legs. "Thanks again!" he beamed at her, waving at her as he rejoined his parents. "Bye!"

Kali grinned, only because she knew to most other people that wasn't easy at all. She followed them back out of her apartments, it was only polite to see them to the door.
"I'll see you again for your party," she told him.

"Party?" Andarien repeated curiously. "What's that?"
"Your celebration tomorrow, for your birthday," Earendil explained with a smile.
Andarien blinked. "So ... a party is kind of like a banquet then?"
Earendil chuckled. "Yes, something like that."
If a bit less formal.
Andarien was pleased. He liked banquets. He could wear his formal clothes then! He liked his formal clothes, the red and gold ones.
"Okay!" he beamed. He waved at Kali again. "See you at my banquet!"

Kali bid them goodbye as the family left her apartment and went back downstairs to where Miyuki and Kara probably were.
"Before I forget," Lin murmured reaching into her bag and pulling out a pair of Andarien's new goggles, "We picked these up while we were out."

Andarien blinked and leaned forward to see what Lin was pulling out of the bag, and when he spotted the goggles, the hall lights shining off the brass frames, he let out a squeal worthy of a teenage girl who just got the prom dress of her dreams.
"My goggles!" he squealed excitedly, his eyes sparkling brightly. "They came! They came!"
He danced on the spot, spinning in a little circle.
"Can I try them on?" he asked eagerly, looking up at Lin with wide, pleading eyes.

"Of course, your father and I would like you to put them on actually. We're going to pick up your sister and since your grandmother will be with her, it would be a good time to see how well they work."
It would be a good gauge into what Andarien could and could not look at.

Andarien looked as though he might pass out from giddiness, and he took the goggles gingerly, as if they were a delicate treasure. He simply held them in his hands for a moment, looking at them with awe-filled eyes, and then he put them carefully over his eyes and pulled the band around his head.
He looked around slowly, blinking to make sure of what he was seeing.
"Whoa," he breathed. "It's ... weird ..."

"How so?"
Lin had never worn glasses of any sort, so she didn't know how weird it could be. Then again, until Andarien, she never heard of the need for glasses that filtered out certain types of Sight before.

Andarien blinked up at Lin, then looked at Earendil.
"It's ... not dark," he murmured in amazement. "But ... but you're not glowing ..."
He lifted the goggles slightly and immediately had to squint at his parents. He lowered the goggles to his eyes once more, grinning from ear to ear.
"Cool!"

"Ah..." Lin looked relieved to hear it wasn't anything bad.
Now that she thought about it, it made sense. The goggles borrowed from Luk were made to block bright lights like the sun, and so by extension the glowing people. While the goggles that were made for Andarien were made specifically to deal with that kind of sight.
"Well then, let's go see how your grandmother and sister are getting along then hm?"
She began to usher Andarien down the hallway to where the study was.
