Feng laughed, "All the better, it's what makes it fun."
In all honesty she liked it when it was hard, it made things interesting even if she didn't do well.
"I have to normally visit grandmother's family if I want a good challenge, or pester Triton."
It was Triton's other hobby besides cooking and he liked to dabble in all sorts of weapons, but his archery had gotten much, much better after he began having practice in it. The end result of him thinking it was much more interesting to teach than making the kids play dodgeball.

"Trust me," Aliya laughed. "You're going to be challenged today."
Then it was her turn, and she went up against one of the men. a breeze blew her hair into her face, but she ignored it as she raised her bow, taking an arrow from the pile between the two starting lines.
Three shots later, she was finished, and heading to the back of the line with a triumphant grin on her face.
Jasmine turned to Feng. "So it seems it is now our turn," she said softly, motioning for Feng to go ahead.

Feng nodded as she took her place. Though the wind was still softly blowing, the part of her hair done up kept most of it out of her way. She planted her feet firmly on the ground and took an arrow to set up. Waiting for Jasmine to do the same.
Miyuki watched, she was excited for River, though she was curious about her aunt.
"This is the first time I don't see her bounce," she told her uncle.

Earendil couldn't help but chuckle, overhearing Miyuki's remark.
Jasmine picked up a bow and nocked her arrow and, taking aim, let it fly. She hit the target just right of center, but it didn't faze her. She was used to not doing as well as others - and as shy as she was, she never backed out of an opportunity to try her skills against others.

Feng nocked her first arrow, and for a moment aimed before letting it fly. There was a feeling of satisfied contentment, it was rare she got to do something like this with others.
It hit, right on the edge between the bulls-eye. While not good, it wasn't bad for someone who didn't normally get a chance to do something like this.
Lin chuckled as well as she leaned against Earendil, she was curious since it had been Ryu who asked for her bow, since Feng didn't normally bring hers.

Jasmine's second shot was marginally better than her first, hitting the edge of her first one, but on the side that was closer to the center. She knew she wasn't going to with the entire tournament, not if she would keep shooting like this, but against Feng she still had a chance.
Unless of course Feng got two bulls-eyes.

Feng set herself up again for the next shot. Letting herself just not think for a moment. She found early on she had a better time clearing her head shooting off arrows than sitting still.
Off went another arrow as it hit with a thud into the edge of the centre again, only on the other side. It was obvious she was over estimating how much she needed to hit.
Not that it mattered she was in her happy place.

Jasmine wasn't quite paying attention to Feng's target, but as she lined up her final shot, her eyes flickered over to see how Feng was doing. When she looked back at her own target, her eyes were set in determination.
She let her third arrow fly - but she had over-corrected her aim, a result of having looked away, and her shot hit the ring outside the center.
She lowered her bow and relaxed her shoulder muscles. It all depended now on Feng's final shot.

Feng wasn't paying attention to Jasmine was ultimately in her 'happy place'. Aiming, she let her last arrow fly, this time it finally actually hit the centre. It wasn't a straight on bulls-eye, but at least finally it was the centre. She finally relaxed and blinked realizing all three arrows had flown.
It seemed quick, it probably was.
Lin grinned as she leaned against Earendil's shoulder, "She looks so calm for once."
"Well why else do you think I encouraged her to take that up?" a voice behind her asked.
Lin blinked, looked over her shoulder and nearly jumped out of her skin, "Dad!"
She jostled into Earendil upon seeing her father, and her two little sisters on his lap. He waved with a cattish grin on his face. She didn't see her mother, but she was probably somewhere telling Haradhel that they had arrived.
"Hi, ah good you got married. That head start wasn't for nothing then," he replied.
"What are you doing here?"
"Did you forget you left a week before Christmas?"
Of course Lin who hadn't celebrated Christmas in well over a decade just blinked stupidity at him.
"I guess so."

Celeborn took a quick glance at the arrows and announced, "Feng!"
Jasmine smiled and bowed her head respectfully to Feng. "Congratulations," she said softly. "You are in the second round."
She eyed her sister, who was bouncing from one foot to the other excitedly. "For now," she added cryptically as she headed off to join the other spectators.
Then it was River's turn, and she stepped up with Ulani as her opponent.
Earendil was startled by Donovan's sudden appearance as well, but he hid it better than Lin. He laughed at their banter. "You picked a good time to show up," he grinned. "This is going to be the most intense match-up of the tournament, I promise you."

Feng was a bit puzzles as she joined the line again, she was about to say thanks when Jasmine went off. She kind of didn't understand what all that was about, she just assumed then she thought her sister was really good.
This was very possible.
"Oh I don't doubt it," Donovan replied.
He had been on enough hunts to see how accurate the fighters were with their arrows. He dipped a hand carefully into his coat pocket and pulled out a very festival red bag. Opening it, he leaned forward towards the girls holding out the bag to them.
"Candy cane?" he asked the two.
"Yay!" Nadia scrambled for the bag and took two, giving one of them to Miyuki, "Thank you!"
She sat back down on her fishy butt before eating it.
Faith tried to grab one but Donovan held it out her hands, "You'll choke on it. Not until you're older."
Whether or not the little girl understood was questionable but she pouted at her daddy all the same.

Earendil chuckled and turned back to the tournament to watch. "So how long have you been sitting there, Donovan?" he asked with a grin while he watched Ulani and River getting ready to shoot.
Aliya grinned widely at Feng as she joined her at the back of the line. "Great shooting," she congratulated her. "You're lucky you were against Jasmine first, Mum and River are the two best archers in all the Borderlands. In a way it's a pity they're against each other so early in the tournament."
Ulani nocked her arrow and took aim, grinning at her great-granddaughter for a brief moment before letting it go. She hit the target dead center and paused to watch River shoot.
River picked up the bow she would use, and in her hands the bow suddenly stretched and then shrunk, fitting itself to her height. Without picking up an arrow, she raised the bow and pulled back on the string. A bright blue glow appeared, and when the light faded a glowing blue arrow was nocked and ready to fly.
She released, and the arrow flew straight ahead, hitting the target dead center, as Ulani's had done. The arrow flared, then faded, leaving something that looked like glass where it had hit.

"What was that?" Feng blinked twice.
She had seen many types of magic, but she had never seen that before. It was very pretty she decided, not even thinking about how it might have affected the shot.
Donovan was tempted to say, long enough but decided to actually give Earendil a real answer.
"Just when Feng started shooting," he replied, "Not that long ago."
Besides it was hard to miss the mers, they were not dressed for the weather at all even though it wasn't freezing cold, it was still cool.

Aliya laughed at Feng's reaction. "Well ... to be honest, we were terrified when we first found out what her gift was," she giggled. "But she's proven to be quite responsible with it. Any time she picks motions as if she's going to shoot - she doesn't even need a bow, really - those manifest themselves as her arrows. She'll never need a quiver, arrows - or really, even a bow. It's one of the reasons Alyse and Timaeus are letting her travel, because really she'll be able to take care of herself."
Ulani grinned at River, expecting nothing less from her, and took her second shot. It split her first arrow down the middle, sending splinters flying. A second perfect bulls-eye.
Taking up the challenge, River drew back her bow. She sent a second blue arrow flying, and like Ulani's it split her first arrow, sending shards of glass-like splinters flying everywhere.

Feng was surprised, but that was a really neat gift and she could see why River's parents weren't as worried as they could be. It would also explain why River was a good shot, she had to practice a lot in order for her gift to become useful to her.
"That's quite neat actually, what are the arrows made of?"
