"Almost four hundred years," Alena replied without hesitation, as if she didn't have to stop and think about it. "Aerin-sol will be over four hundred years old by now ... she was very young when it happened."

"Poor Aerin," Rhea murmured sadly. "I never got a sense of sadness from her, though, only ... anger ... and frustration ..."

Wait.... Lin thought about it.. and she thought about it some more. No, it was off by fifty years then. Curious she thought, what could have caused her to not sleep after fifty years of normal sleeping. Well she thought that assumed if she was awake during those fifty years.

"Well she's been awake for 350 years and hasn't been able to come home at all, she would have every reason to be angry and frustrated,"
Lin murmured, "Though that also brings the question on why she's still with Caranthir."

Honestly the more and more she thought about it, the more she had to wondered what held their odd partnership together.

"Then she is still with him?" Alena beamed, quite pleased. "Excellent. I'm sure he will bring her back here when it is time. The king will be pleased. She was very good at what she did ... we have not had an equal leader for her legion since she left us."

Rhea frowned. "Legion?"

Alena nodded. "Like Aethos-sola, Aerin-sol had command of her own small army. A group of Wing Riders, to be precise. She only led them for a few years, but they have never been the same since she was gone."

Well that was something that Lin didn't realize, though she could sort of see Aerin as being a leader type. It was just strange hearing about it now.

"So.... she fought in the war too?"

"Fourteen years," Alena nodded. "And our whole nation owes her a great debt. If not for her, we would probably all be dead. The dragon she killed had already killed many of us. It was after Aethos-sola when she got it. It nearly cost her her own life. She is a hero to our people, though it is possible she may not even know it. She hadn't regained consciousness by the time she left the island ... has she spoken to you about it?"

Rhea shook her head. "She never speaks. At least, hardly."

"And she doesn't talk about her past," Lin admitted, "I mean, this might explain why she continues to hunt dragons. That much we know, she's known as the Dragon Slayer back home and rumour has it that she gained her hair colour from all the dragons she fought. Of course... no one knows about this place so it only makes sense that there would be stories about her hair."

Old and mysterious like Caranthir, though now less mysterious and more... approachable?

Alena smiled. "No, she was born with the same hair as the rest of us," she assured Lin. "Though in a way, people are correct. When we left the rest of the Light Elves, were were as golden haired as I would assume they still are. But when we left them, we lost our source of magic: we could not take their magic-giver. But one magic was left to us, the gift of firecasting."

She held out one hand, and a small flame appeared above her palm. "Everyone here can do this. And only this. And after thousands of years, our appearance has altered, reflecting it."

So that was why Aerin could use fire, and had that very vivid hair colour. Lin looked at it in interest, it wasn't the first time she had seen fire magic after all. Grandpa Long wasn't allowed near her without parental supervision after that.

"I see...."
Lin murmured thoughtfully, "So that's why Aerin can use fire."

It was also the reason why she had never heard of Aerin's second magic gift, not that it was a question that she asked often.

"Kind of interesting since Caranthir uses water."

It kind of suited their personalities too when she really thought about it.

Alena blinked. "What do you mean, interesting?" she asked. "Is it indicative of something?"

Rhea thought about it. "I suppose in a way, they're quite opposite," she murmured, "though I think in as many ways, they're quite similar."

Both mysterious, both refusing to answer questions, though they did have different ways of going about it.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 11, 2010 5:40 pm

"Different sides of the same coin," Lin supplied, "They're both mysterious, old, full of rumours and legends about them, but they act differently. Like... take the way their don't answer questions. Aerin simply won't tell you if she doesn't want to, Caranthir has this habit of dancing around the question. He makes himself seem more open than Aerin but in the end he won't answer the question if he doesn't want to."

Can't fault him for that it was just weird how the two were so different in that way. Also the way they sometimes... debated? Argued... well not argued Caranthir liked teasing Aerin, so she supposed baiting would be the term to use. It was like fire and water sometimes.

Alena nodded and smiled. "Interesting. Well, at least she's not alone. But can you tell me anything else about Caranthir? I would very much like to know something more about him. He has after all been with Aerin-sol for four hundred years. What is the relation between the two?"

To her there was more than curiosity at stake. Traveling so long with a man, it was possible that the first sol could have taken a husband.

"Not much...." Lin admitted.

Which made her wish she had asked more questions while on that hunt with them but of course it was hard to ask and afterwards she was dealing with the aftermath of her first kill.

"He is old.... traveled or so I heard by himself for a long time before traveling with Aerin. He comes off as open and friendly, don't get me wrong he is a very nice person but part of it is to throw people off track. Like I said, he has a different way of keeping people from knowing too much about him. He... teases Aerin on occasion, there is worry in that teasing but it's hard to tell with those two."

If the two did have a relationship no one was going to know until they were ready to let everyone know.

"He's a very nice man," Rhea added with a smile. "He's very kind, and helpful, and he's always looking after Aerin, and everyone else ... but Aerin first and foremost. But Lin is right, it is impossible to tell if they have any ind of real relationship. They have different quarters in the barracks, and as far as I know they don't visit each other that often ... all their talking is done outside."

Alena smiled faintly. "Thank you," she murmured. "It is something that has been bothering me for many years. Thank you."

Lin could kind of see why if the two had been together for that long. Honestly anyone would wonder after a while.

"About what those two would have been up to after all these centuries?"

Alena nodded at Lin, then tilted her head slightly, appearing thoughtful.

"That," she murmured, "and when he took her away we really had no way of knowing what he was like. We didn't know him at all. It is only natural to wonder, and to worry. Would you be able to let a loved one be taken away by someone without worrying about them for four hundred years?"

She looked at Lin more directly. "As Aethos-sola, I was the one to raise Aerin-sol. I cared for her as a daughter, as if she were my own. Not to worry would be, for me, unnatural."
