Hm, well if money isn't the important aspect to you, and continuing school really is that absolutely necessary, have you considered student loans? Yeah, it's a lot of debt, and it really sucks, but since you seem to be in the position where you're turning a PHD into your livelyhood, it might be time to just forget about money and let yourself go into debt.

Ah, well she didn't have to do any specific Irish Dance; just prance around as best she could to look like she was doing one. XD

Ah, that sounds nice. I definitely prefer smaller cons like that; been to Otakon, and it was fun and all, but it was so stressful and busy. My favorite was definitely Yaoi Jam, which I'm sure was smaller than Yaoi Con even, but that's what made it great. And I do love California weather.

Eh, I honestly am often okay with remakes changing the original, as long as the change works for it/makes sense/isn't awkward/isn't otherwise bad in any way. XD;; So like... I don't dismiss change just because it's not loyal to the original, but I still feel they should have a good reason for it. Either way, I can probably at least appreciate the gruesomeness.

Snake is... difficult to explain. He doesn't really fit any typical character archetype; he's just Snake. And that's why that girl was so out of character, because she easily fit the somewhat dopey, always attempting to be manly archetype, that also has some 'rambunctious kid-like qualities.' Here's a good example of more what Snake is like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUByV73XG-0&feature=related

Yes, I agree. The mistakes by no means ruined it.

Yea and in the end if that's what I'll have to do that's what I'll try to do (doesn't solve the getting in worry, but I suppose if I have the money I'll get in somewhere). I just worry about qualifying for the amount of money in loans I'd need, I mean I own nothing, can't really put up my manga as collateral. I only have about a thousand (ugh spent so much!!!) in manga anyhow. A car that's probably not worth a grand. I'd need to get someone to co-sign with me, and my parents have their own massive piles of debt I'd feel awful if I couldn't ever pay this back, because I fail. I dunno, I'll just try to get through MA and worry about PhD when I get to it.

I think your sub should have demonstrated the Caramelldansen. ^_~

Yea, small cons are nice, Kita was small enough to not be insane but large enough to create all these scheduling problems. They didn't really handle it very well either. Also specific interest cons are nice, just because I go to Yaoi con knowing there is a lot I'd want to do, see, or be intrigued by. I did discover new things that I actually liked at Kita, but many things were just events and series that weren't at all to my interest. And giving how screwed up the schedule was that meant a lot of empty time.

I don't know if I can say they have a good reason (I don't even know if 2.0 on it's own could justify it, I guess you'd have to see where the last two films went), but I can at least say the changes do work on their own and come off well.

I think Guy Love probably is better supported by at least one character actually pretending to be manly, maybe not hyper manly, but I think it still works (for the skit). But yea I wouldn't have expected any character (whose even partially developed) to really be that hyper manliness.

Well, that works then. And aren't student loans different? I mean, shoot, I've never done them, so I don't really know anything about them, but I was assuming you were eligible without a cosigner? Nah, I have no idea, never mind. But yeah, you gotta do what you gotta do in the end, so good luck!

He actually did, for a couple seconds, but seemed to be under the impression that she couldn't perform that herself without knowing the song better. XD Even though it's like the easiest dance ever.

Kita sounds a lot like how Saboten was. It was pretty big, but not huge, but it was terribly unorganized, and most of the panels sucked. But yeah, that's also why I prefer more specific cons like Yaoi Con. I wish they'd have more sub genres like that for other cons.

Fair enough. I probably could never like a movie for Evangelion as much as the series, just because there's simply not enough time to cover what I feel is a very complex plot.

Yeah, and I mean by no means is Snake not manly; he just doesn't... try to be manly like the cosplayer did. He just is. And that would've worked great with Guy Love, because I feel like that's pretty similar to how Turk is too. But ah well, it was still funny.

All loans it depends on the amount you want to take out, because they want a certain guarantee that they will see that money again. So yea there are loans I could take out based on my age, established credit etc. But I have no property, after this year I'll have no money, so there is only so much I'll qualify for on my own. What makes student loans different from other loans is (1) interest rates (generally they are lower) and (2) when you have to pay it back (generally you don't have to start paying it back until you are done with school.

In the UK you don't have to pay your loans back until you are making a certain amount of money a year, so that's kinda nice. It's not too high, I think 17K at the moment (though the bar on where loans have to be paid back will go up a bit as tuition fees are raising drastically, from 3000 pounds a year to 9000 in most places, a BIG increase, they'll now be pretty much around where most of the US is), however if you graduate and just can't get a job (especially in this fail economy) you aren't going to be pressured to pay back your loans right away. And if you can't pay them back by 40-45 (something like that) they just fall off, though a lot went wrong with your life if that's the case. In the US you start accruing interest on student loans as soon as you aren't in school anymore, so if you can't start paying them off right away you are going to sink deeper and deeper into a hole. I mean some people graduated and couldn't find jobs for more than a year, some people still can't get jobs. Half of them just rushed back into school to put their loans back on hold (and try not to think about the greater debt they are amassing, praying for the economy to lift), the rest are just sunk for now.

It is the easiest dance ever, though I'd still feel awkward. Btw stumbled across this a few days after and it made me smile so much: http://akimyra.deviantart.com/art/Zim-and-Dib-Caramelldansen-127540200

I think I remember you talking about Saboten now, and yea I think it was pretty similar in terms of feel. It was fun regardless, but the convention itself was kinda fail in many ways.

I've watched the first two episodes of Neon Genesis now, thus far I like the movies better I have to say, but the first two episodes with a few tiny added bits is essentially just the first movie at this point. episode 1 was almost verbatim, so since I watched the movie just last week it was kinda like rewatching the exact same thing. I know there will be more later, but atm I'm waiting for it. I don't know if I'll like the movies more or the series, I guess it depends on what the series give me. Atm the movies cut out a lot of the plot, but they treat it in a way that with a few exceptions the plot doesn't need to be there (or again they change the plot). And I think 2.0 treats it better than 1.0, even though they make some huge changes from the original. So I guess in the end it's going to come down to how much the subplots, characters, etc feed into my own personal interests that will determine whether I like the movies or the series better. Should probably do more of my papers before I watch anymore though. xd

That is how Turk is, but that rendition of Guy Love relies heavily on one knowing that. I think the over-hype works better for those who don't know the source as much, it works better as comedy, it's the easier laugh. Like even here I feel most people know Scrubs, but not everyone has seen all of Scrubs, or know it well enough to know the characters. I think to me Snake didn't really come off is over-manly though, he came off as really dumb. Which even not knowing the series well that doesn't seem right.

Ah, I see. Yeah, the UK system definitely sounds better in terms of student loans.

Haha, nice.

Hm, I see. I do remember the movie being very similar to the first few episodes, then drifting off from there. We'll see how it goes then. I wish I had time to watch the series now, but that's not gonna happen. XD;;

Well I will give the cosplayer that Snake actually is kinda dumb. But he's more dumb in an... almost naive way? Like he doesn't relate to people well, and doesn't understand how a lot of them think, so then he just assumes they're all stupid for believing things he doesn't understand.

Yea it is, but of course I'd still have to be taking out loans in the US to pay for school even over here because I'd still be international. I keep hedging on whether or not I want to apply for the 2 year extended work visa, and then after having living here 3 years (this year would count) I could do everything on residence status. I probably will end up waiting two years anyhow, but because if that if I really want to stay in the UK then I need to decide that before I move home, otherwise I'm not entirely sure I'll still be able to count this last year. Not sure if it's consecutive years. I just can't decide, and honestly I think I'd have to move home to decide. Feeling a bit calmer as I get through assessments now, and I dunno how I do it but I feel if it's all I want to do I'll have to figure it out somehow. Now I'm on to worrying about making the right choice in terms of where. xd

Yea it does drift off, I got through episode 17 last night (TOTALLY failed on that wait until after my papers thing, lol, but I'm still doing ok, ahead of where I was during Christmas time assessments by a lot still), and as it progresses I definitely see a lot of huge changes between the original and the rebuild, and certain things the rebuild did I don't like as much. Also I started liking the anime a lot more once it added in Asuka and what's his face (too lazy to go look it up...Kaji probably not how it's spelled but hopefully you can figure it out, guy who used to have something with Misato) in. And that's where 2.0 starts so that's probably why I like 2.0 so much more, even if they go in different directions, I get a lot more invested in the character arcs with them in. Not sure where the anime is going in relation to what I know of rebuild, trying not to spoil to many more things while still going back and forth on comparison info (always a dangerous line), but while I really like where 2.0 went I'm kinda thinking I wouldn't like it as much if the anime went there. The rebuild does seem to have taken the series in a very theatrical direction, which is great for a movie series, but I don't know if I'd like it as an anime series. But we shall see. Kinda wanted to finish my Mod paper today (the fleshed out quote + explanatory outline is complete and I have more than the word count between it and the intro, so I'll have to par down once I put it together, but doing so will take some time) so I might not get any further than where I am today...though I dunno, see this is why I wasn't supposed to start it until after assessments. xd

Yea I'd get that. I mean it's not that I thought Snake was a genius. It's just she makes him retarded in a kindergarten reading level kinda way. stressed I still like it though. razz

Well then, I wish you luck in figuring this all out. XP

Hm, I see. Ghh, now I want to watch the series, but I definitely do not have the time. *angst* I haven't even had time to be on Gaia in almost a week. Sorry 'bout that.

Haha, poor Snake.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 4:18 pm

Now I'm back to worrying if I'm smart enough and not about money, hah! Oh well, guess there will always be something, and I'm trying to calm down. Just so wound up and stressed and just unhappy lately. I wish I could will myself to be happy. *sigh*

I did NOT have the time either...the entire anime later (as of over a week ago) *dies*. Yea I gave up FB for a week after I kinda poofed from Gaia (obviously) to slightly make up for it. And then played the Sims again for the first time in almost a year. I cannot win! xd Oh well, I'm catching up to where I wanted to be with my papers. Hoping I can finish the second one tomorrow (I have 2016/4000 words, and the rest is just the poetry, the first half was the heavy philosophical theory stuff so it should be doable if I get up early enough) or Thursday. And then get a good chunk of my last paper done by Saturday night so I can go out and see people for the first time in weeks, and just edit Monday and Tuesday. That's my goal.

Anyhow...I have to say I hate the end of the anime. One friend said the movie (old one, well second old one, he says the first is all recap) makes up for it. Another friend says it does but it's really weird and will annoy me. So I'm not sure how to feel. Thus far my opinions have been pretty in line with the first friend so I'm going to trust him and hope it'll make up for it. The only reason I haven't just caved and watched it already is I'm going to have to find it, it's not on the site I watched the anime on. I'm sure I can find it but the fact that I don't just automatically know a place it's streamed has helped me resist. I think I was disappointed with how the anime ended for two reasons. The main thing is the last two episodes were just an anti-climatic trip, the vision of the alternate lifeline was amusing (although totally couldn't help but think the whole time that WRONG, Rei may have a soul, but she has a clone body, that body would not exist! To make it worse she's nothing like Rei, can't even see a hint that shows same girl in very different life like with the other characters, so the only part of her that should maybe have some familiar semblance is gone). So yea it was just a weird trip that came to no meaningful conclusion (I thought) and then the end. Secondly, the two episodes before that, you get the 17th angel and it's just rushed and none of the actual bond feels authentic to me. I feel told that Shinji is close to him, but I don't see anything to prove that. I hope the manga would go deeper into that, but on the anime alone it's just a surface connection and thus nothing about that plotline feels dramatic or compelling. Shinji goes on and on about how he was the one who deserves to die, but there is no why. You barely get to know the other guy, you also don't get to see any of why he would suddenly decide, no wait I don't want to destroy humans kill me. He notices it's Lilith not Adam and then "understands," but we don't get any information about what he understands. I mean that's the only point in the anime where they finally reveal that truth. 1.0 - which you said you've seen reveals it right in the beginning (they never call it Adam), and so I spent a lot of the series waiting to see why it was relevant to the original that they didn't know the truth. And never got that. I guess the final thing is I got to really hate Asuka at the end, and in 2.0 she was my favorite character. She...well you haven't seen 2.0 you've said so I won't get into it much, just she's the same and yet different. You get more about her in the anime, and yet somehow that makes her worse. And then there are things about her that are so different, blah, I'll just hush I can't really say without just exampling things and I'm sure you'll see 2.0 someday. So yea, I liked the middle of the anime (well I like the beginning too but a lot is in the rebuild) but I didn't like the end. Granted there's few animes I do like the end of so, that in itself isn't too surprising. Hopefully End of Eva gives me something a bit more substantial, if not I'll keep my hopes on the rebuild, lol. 3.0 in 2012. It's gone in a vastly different direction from what I can tell though (I can't see End of Eva at all going the way 2.0 did based on where the anime went) so I guess I can hope that I at least don't suffer the same dissapointments if the rebuild drops off as well. So yea, I do like Neon Genesis, but I feel the anime didn't get deep enough, rather it didn't explain the depth enough, to justify the abstractions it went into.

Yeah, for me it's worrying about being in debt. I only won one scholarship in the end, after all the ones I entered, and it was only $350. I have enough money to cover food and spending in Japan, but not enough for tuition for summer and next year, as well as the program fee and plane ticket. So student loans it is. I know I'll be in far less debt than most people, but I just wish I could've avoided it all together, you know?

Well, I have this week and then next week before I'm free (besides finals, but when you're an art major, those are actually the easiest time), and will be working alllll this weekend to finish a huge art project that's nowhere near done by Monday. Also gotta finish my electronic portfolio for Japanese and my Life Drawing outside assignment by then. Pphhhhth.

Aaaand, I totally started reading that last paragraph, then stopped when I realizing you were saying a bunch of things that I had no idea what you were talking about, coming to realize that they were spoilers. For shame, giving me no warning. XD So yeah, no comment. I have not gotten far enough in the series to read analysis on the ending, eheh.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 28, 2011 5:38 am

Yea, exactly. I mean I know that I can swing the finances somehow, people do. But I fear debt. I mean living in debt is why when the economy crashes millions of people lose their businesses, their houses. I have none of that, and maybe I don't even want any of that, but I still worry. And wanting a degree and career in the arts makes me nervous as well. I mean it's just easier to justify taking out large loans for medical school, you'll be a doctor, and even though there isn't 100% security to anything, it seems more secure than saying you'll be a classical scholar. The world more easily recognizes their doctors and lawyers than their writers of aesthetic criticism. stressed

Finals were usually the easiest time as an English major as well, so I know what you mean. Anyhow good luck with the projects.

Wait, I thought you had seen the entire anime it had just been awhile? I would have warned you except I thought you said you had! Because you had said the anime and the manga were better. The only thing you said you hadn't seen was 2.0 and I didn't talk about that because of that. Ahh! Sorry, I wouldn't have even gotten into it except I thought you were done. Maybe I just assumed because you said the anime was better that you had finished it. Anyhow sorry. ~_~

Yeah, same here. I just have to look at going to Japan as an investment; studying abroad looks really good on applications.

Good luck with your essays.

Haha, it's cool. I thought I had said that I finished about eight volumes of the manga and ten episodes of the anime, but maybe not. I know I've been saying though that I wanna finish the anime, but don't have time. XD
PostPosted: Sun May 01, 2011 4:20 pm

Haha, that's totally what I'm hoping for as well with my MA in England. xd

1 essay to go, about 700 words into it now. Going to try to knock out another 300-400 tonight and then finish it (or most of it) tomorrow so I can spend all day Tuesday (or most of Tuesday around finishing this paper) editing. That is my goal.

Yea, sorry, I guess I understood that as you want to rewatch it rather than finish it. Haven't slept a lot lately, sorry. I have no idea where the manga goes, and I've read differences between manga and anime so hopefully I at least didn't spoil the manga too much. I will keep my own self-spoiling to myself. xd Mostly I just don't expect to read the manga anytime soon if ever. When I have time to read series again I need to first finish FMA, up through 24 is out I think, I've only read through 23. And then I want to try to get back into Host Club. I debate on if I ever can go back to Vampire Knight still. Of course if Loveless ever updates again I'll probably drop everything for that, so frustrating. I at least know a volume 9 exists, it just hasn't been released outside of Japan for all I can tell. Even though it released there something like 2 years ago. *sigh*

Yay, looks like you've got things under control. I so don't. Didn't get enough done this weekend. I still have a big drawing to finish (only have the sketch done) and a portfolio full of essays and stuff to write by Tuesday. Would be doable if I didn't have class all day tomorrow, and then my busiest day of work on Mondays as well. Yet here I am on Gaia; after doing homework all day until 11PM, I couldn't focus anymore and just ended up screwing it.

Haha, I see. Ehh, don't worry too much; I didn't read most of your paragraph, and I already forgot just about all of what I did read. I'm pretty good about that; if I accidentally read a spoiler, I forget it before it impacts my viewing of a series.
PostPosted: Mon May 02, 2011 10:39 am

Got to just under 2300 words and it's about 6:30pm...granted I started at 2pm and stopped at around 5:30pm...and was probably somewhat prone to distraction while writing. Irregardless I have 5 more sources to review, 2 of which I have to find, but hoping to at least knock out 3 of them tonight. If I can get up early tomorrow I should still get most of the day to edit and can just easily stroll in Wed and turn them in. Unlike last term when I strolled in a 3 day sleep-deprived/food-deprived mess of stress and exhaustion. Here's to hoping. Going to allow myself until about 8 I think before I get back to it, and then try to seriously focus. Anyhow hope you get that drawing done, and the essays...that's what Gaia is here for, because sometimes you just have to screw it.

Oh well I said...j/k j/k. Seriously sorry I blundered on understanding that you hadn't seen the whole series. I shall be looking for the old movies Wed, but I shall go mum until whenever you get back into the series.

Ah, good luck to you then. Glad you're more on track than last time. I got the drawing done, but none of the portfolio. Whoops. It's okay though; found out it's really due Thursday. *twitches and explodes* I am just at that point where I'm practically in a trance to finish the semester; I'm always tired, yet always hyper too, constantly yawning and shaking my leg restlessly, then I have been getting way angrier than usual at small things like not being able to draw something right or a car cutting me off. I feel like I'm going crazy, and everything seems surreal, haha. XD I'm just so done with this semester; it's been my busiest one by far.

Yay. Not sure when I'll catch up though. D:
