The girls snacked for a bit on treats that were made specially for the occasion, until River suddenly spotted Celeborn getting ready to start an archery contest. There were five men lined up to take part in it, and others in line, and her eyes lit up as she turned to Miyuki once more.

"I'm going to join in the archery contest!" she told her brightly. "Do you want to watch?"

Archery was River's specialty when it came to weapons - and for good reason.

Miyuki looked up, "Okay."

After all River was her friend, she should go and watch. Miyuki had only seen a bit of archery, she knew her mother knew how to. Lin had begun to take out her weapons again now that Miyuki was older and during their two week stay in Gaia part of the visit was to get her mother up to par again.

Miyuki hated it when Vincent beat on her mommy, but her mommy said it was good, it showed her mistakes so she wouldn't do them in the future.

And River wasn't the only girl who was heading towards the archery range to take up the challenge: Jasmine had joined the line, as well as Aliya, who was clearly pleased to see two of her three granddaughters taking part.

"This is going to be quite the competition," Aliya laughed when River joined them.

Jasmine looked at River silently. She wouldn't speak in front of Miyuki, but it was clear that she was feeling some sort of resentment towards her sister's participation in the contest.

Miyuki looked around to see if there was anyone else she knew who was going to be taking part in the contest. Only to give out an eep as she was picked up by her Auntie Feng and swung around.

"Feng, please put your niece down before you freak her out," Ryu came up to the women holding the bow he had borrowed from his little sister.

Feng stopped in mid swing and Miyuki looked over her aunt's shoulder, "Why would I do that?"

Ryu just sighed, it seemed whenever Miyuki got use to something she was perfectly fine with it, the first time Feng did that, Miyuki did freak out and turned fox running up into a tree.

"See.... she's fine with it," Feng stuck out her tongue at Ryu.

"Fine, but you can't take part if your hands are full, I had to bug Lin for hers because you left yours," Ryu pointed out.

Naida peeked out floating behind her Uncle Ryu and giggled as she waved manically at River. The visit had been kind of hard on Naida, first the snow and then River being cooped up in the house, she had enough energy to maybe put River to shame.

River squealed and waved back at Naida just as wildly. "You're here too!" she exclaimed. "I thought maybe you'd already gone back home because I didn't see you here yet today! Are you going to do the tournament too? Do you know how to shoot a bow? I'm going to do it! And I think I'll even do pretty good!"

"That goes without saying," Jasmine murmured, more to herself than anyone else, turning and looking at the targets.

River stuck her tongue out at her sister, then turned back to the others. "How many of you are entering?" she asked them brightly.

"Just her," Ryu pointed to Feng who was bouncing Miyuki, "I know it might be hard to imagine but Feng knows a thing or two about archery. She learned from the Ito clan. Lin decided she would rather dance than take part."

Ryu himself didn't know much about archery and Naida only knew fans because it was the closest thing to weapons and art that she could get, and despite her bouncy-ness she preferred the arts.

Naida floated up to River and circled around her friend happily, "Uncle Ryu and I are just going to watch."

"Feng, do you want to take part or not?" Ryu finally asked his sister.

Feng to her credit set Miyuki down who was wobbling a bit before grinning up at her aunt.

"I'm coming," she murmured taking the bow from her brother, "Be patience."

River giggled at the two. They were sillier than she was!

"Come on, Feng!" she beamed. "You've got to stay in line, then! And you others, if you want to watch, they've got seats set up over there!"

She pointed to the sidelines, where several rows of benches had been set up in a safe place to watch from.

"All right!" Feng pumped her arms up in the air as she took her place in line.

She grinned at River from ear to ear, she didn't except anything amazing to happen but it was nice to try her skills with other people that weren't other clan members.

Ryu meanwhile ushered both his nieces to a bench to see the contest in piece.

River and Jasmine both squealed and ducked to avoid being hit by Feng's bow.

"Careful!" River laughed. "Don't hit anyone!"

When it became apparent that no one else was going to be joining the queue for the archery, Celeborn raised one arm for silence so that he could speak.

"There will be two people at a time, and you each have three arrows," he told them. "The person with the higher score at the end of three arrows will continue into the next round, while the person with the lower score will be eliminated! The winner of the tournament will receive this bow, which Ulrich himself has created."

He held up a bow that was brand new - thick, black wood, carved from top to bottom with runes that were painted on in gold.

Feng calmed down and focused, it was one of the few times she actually did. It was probably why Donovan never had an issue with Feng training, it was pretty much the only time she was calm.

It sounded pretty straight forward.

The first two archers stepped up to the marks and took their aim. One, two, three - both had three bulls-eyes.

"Yacobin!" Celeborn announced after checking to see whose were the best bulls-eyes.

The losing elf bowed his respects to Yacobin and went off to join the spectators, while Yacobin gripped his bow more tightly and headed to the back of the line again.

"It's going to be a tough contest," River commented, watching as the next two fighters took their shots. This time there was a clear winner, as one of the elves missed the bulls-eye by a hair.

With marksmanship like that Feng could easily see it was going to be tough. The only people she knew who could hit like that were the spiritualists from the Mizu clan but they used arrows in their work a lot.

Feng nodded, "Nothing less than a bulls-eye is going to do, and even then it has to be a really good one."

"You mean a really good three," River replied absently as the next set of archers went. "All three shots count, after all."

"I don't know what you're worried about," Aliya smiled at her granddaughter. "You've shot against these men before."
PostPosted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 12:29 pm

Feng chuckled, "It still doesn't take away from the fact all these men are really good."

She looked thoughtfully down at River.

"Of course, I don't know much about you."

She knew this as a fact, only knew River was lots of fun to play with and always fun to be with, but didn't know little details. For all she knew, River might even be a better shot than the men going up right now.

River just grinned up at Feng. "You'll see!" she giggled mischievously.

"Besides," Jasmine spoke up, averting her eyes as if it made it easier to speak to Feng. "These men have to be good. It's their job. If they weren't good, they would not have been hired as fighters."

"True," Aliya agreed. She looked at Feng and smiled apologetically. "It's going to be a very tough competition."
