The guards and scientists were running around, clearly in disarray. Alaric could pretty much move around however he wanted. Exploring might be in order.
Kurtis then realized that there were more important things to do. Like researching the substance before the agents found them and killed them.

Hm. Panic... Alaric noted, clearly forgetting to keep up his ruse as a simple technician. Something was wrong, he could feel it. His intuition had kept him alive up to this point, he wouldn't ignore it now.
An empty hallway proved to be his sanctuary. Things were relatively quiet here, which seemed odd to him. His instinct told him to leave the hall, but another part of him told him he was close, so very close to his goal.
He would trust his curiosity.
He knelt down, shoving the toolkit off to the side, since it had nothing of any value anyway. After he shrugged his backpack from his shoulder to the floor, opening it with great haste, pulling out various parts and assembling them. Within moments, he had a fully functional handgun with two clips of ammunition. He rolled up his sleeves and unzipped his jumpsuit a little, putting the handgun in the concealed holster under his shoulder.
It was time to follow the lead that would likely bring him to his death. He proceeded down the hall, bringing the toolbox and backpack with him, having a feeling that he would need them. A door became present to him on his left side as he drew closer with a cautious walk. Clearly the entrance to a security station. If he gained access to this room, he would have camera control.
The entrance panel was easy enough to hack. An outdated security model that he became familiar with back in his days in the military. It was basically useless against his skill. He entered the room after to find two security guards, both frantically watching the cameras, as if looking for something...
There was no time to ask. Alaric quickly knocked the two unconscious with the toolbox, first the one sitting down, then the one standing next to him. After the deal was done, he pushed the man off the chair, helping himself to the camera control...
It was time to see what he could find.

On the screens, Alaric could see a lot of movement, with no apparent order. As he glanced around the screens, he did a quick double-take to see two monitors turned off. He tried to toggle the power, but they didn't come back on. They were marked Connor's Offices.

What the hell is going on? People were running about like headless chickens. No one apparently knew what was going on. Brushing her bangs behind her ear, Madeline headed straight for the closest security station. Maybe I'll be able to understand better what's going on.
Upon entering the room, she found out she wasn't the only who had the same idea. "Who are you? Do you have clearance to be in this part of the building?" The man said nothing, but upon further inspection, she realized he was a technician. She looked past him and saw that the cameras marked Connor's Offices were down. "I suppose you're trying to fix the faulty cameras? While you check to see if the equipment is faulty here, I'll go ahead down there. I hope that the problem is in this piece of machinery, though. Ah well. Good luck to you," she waved. It wasn't all too unusual to see a technician pass by - things broke all the time.
She didn't really need to go down there, but maybe the reason why everyone seemed to be so frantic was at Connor's Offices. "I can only hope that whatever's going on will soon be fixed."

Alaric was startled by the new voice. He was glad he found himself able to suppress his instincts, lest he pull his gun on her. He didn't need any more hostility than that which he showed the guards beneath him... And it was at that thought he realized they were even there. He kept his hand on his gun in his toolbox, out of sight.
If he had any hope of keeping his cover, then he would need to leave, and fast. He picked up his toolbox, leaving the gun inside and ushering her out quickly, he hoped not too hastily.
"Sorry, it's just a wiring problem in there... I think it might be connected directly to the cameras in those offices. Would you mind showing me to the offices so I can get a look at them?" he asked as he pulled her out of the room, hoping to come off as more of a pushy engineer than suspicious. He closed the door behind them, stopping himself from exhaling from relief.
At that point he leaned against the door, keeping eye contact with the woman in order better keep her attention. He always came off as trustworthy from his gaze, and hoped that trait would help him here.
He had a hunch as to what was in that room, and he hoped she would lead him to it...

"Hm? Sure I can lead you to the offices. It's a pretty big place, isn't it?" She gave him a half smile, and started to walk in the direction of the offices. "Seems like everybody's going crazy. You have any idea why?" He might have heard something from the people passing by. And she wanted to make conversation with him as they leisurely walked to their destination. "Or are you as clueless as I am?"
She came to realize that he never showed her his clearance pass. Now would be a good time for someone to sneak in here. But this guy doesn't seem so bad. She maintained her easygoing aura. I hope we don't run into any trouble. She liked to believe the best in people. She hoped it wouldn't lead her astray.

He could speak with her honestly here, he realized. She wasn't looking to route out any inconsistencies within the lab, judging from her demeanor. No, she just seemed calm... And slightly oblivious. He was glad this was the case.
"I honestly haven't the faintest idea... I just got transferred here to fix up some stuff, and when I got here... Well, it was just like this. Don't you work here? How are you in the dark on this when everyone from the brass to the janitor seems to be in a panic?" he asked, now curious as to where she came from.
She definitely stood out amongst the current setting, that was certain. He let himself relax a bit, watching her as he walks not out of suspicion, but rather out of interest. Granted, his interest still lied whole-heartedly in those offices, though she seemed to be good company...

She tilted her head in his direction. "Hm? Oh, uh, I tend to tune out everything that goes on when I work. I'm a bit of a workaholic," she chuckled nervously. There a few times where she would forget about sleeping and eating in order to work on/prove her theories (and thankfully, they proved sound) to the science committee. She stretched her arms out in front of her to relax her muscles.
Now she knew about the mysterious substance and how it was here. But she never got a close enough look at it, to her eternal disappointment. If only I could have a few hours to work with it! It would be such a fascinating study... She turned to grin at him. "And what about you? What did you do before transferring here?"
By this point, they had finally reached the offices. "Oh! Well, I guess we won't be able to finish our conversation, will we?"

"Maybe another time... For now, we find the cameras behind the door here, see what's wrong..." he said, calmly looking at the door. He expected it to be locked, though he would not be the one to open it. It could require clearance.
He was looking forward to this. Even if the substance wasn't behind this door, there would most certainly be a clue to its whereabouts, or something... The office looked administrative, so odds are there would be information.
He just hoped there wouldn't be resistance on the other side... Just in case, he kept his hand on his gun in the toolbox, making it look as though he were checking to see if he had all his tools, or something like that.
She seemed to be able to connect with that sort of scenario...

The scientist escaped, apparently. McMullard trotted back to find St. Cyrill talking to...a redneck? It appeared that in his confusion, the country man had opened up with his shotgun. They seemed to be all right now.
The door was indeed locked, and locked tight. Only the highest level of clearance would get one inside. Within the lab, Connor was absolutely breathless as he analyzed the small bit of substance before him. "This...is so incredible..." He could barely speak.

"Hmm, that's odd." Madeline found that she couldn't enter the room. Normally she could get into anything. Maybe the substance is here? The possibility of it was high; there were only a few reasons why she would not be able to enter a place.
Calmly, (which was odd with the place being in such a frenzy), she did what a normal person would do when they couldn't get into a place. She knocked. There's no way I'm gonna find someone with high enough clearance within the next five minutes to get me in. She knocked/banged loud enough that anyone who was in the room would have heard it.
Suddenly, a feeling of dread filled her. One - the place is crazy. Two - the cameras are out. Three - I can't get in. I'm also guessing that no one else will have the clearance either. She had already thought of someone possibly getting in. Maybe that person (or people) were already within the room? "I hate to say it, but if there are people in this room, and they don't answer soon, I'm afraid we're going to have to break down the door," she mentioned casually. While she looked calm, she was busy thinking of solutions for possible problems occurring. Panic got nobody anywhere, but she couldn't help but feel nervous.
