"A zoo is a place where people keep animals from all over the world for other people to come see. They're in cages or tanks, depending on what they are. Most of them don't get a lot of privacy either because there is usually someone there watching them, either just for fun or because it's their job."

Oh... :::He thinks about the concept for a moment:::
Then yes, that seems to describe me quite well. :::Kal kept his smile on, but it appeared to wither in his eyes. He moved over to the untouched bed and sat down on it. It looked like it might have been the first time he'd ever been on it, because he started testing how cushy it was:::
Hm... this place isn't half bad when it isn't full of all those court people...
:::But then he looked somewhat longly at the door to the place he really considered his room:::

Luana leaned back against a nearby collumn and looked at Kal, resisting the urge to peek outside. She continued to wear the towel over her shoulders like a shawl.
"You never answered my question before," she said. "How have you been? Is everything okay?"

:::He snapped out of his own thoughts quickly:::
Oh... yeah. I'm uh... :::He smiled embarassedly. For letting himself be discovered, and for letting Kara be right. He really hadn't shared his thoughts with anyone. Not even his sister:::
Have you ever thought something was true, and entirely solid, and then found out that none of it was very true..? And worse...has that thing ever been the basis of something as big as...oh...I dunno. Your life?
:::he tried to sound light hearted about it, but a hint of sarcasm shone through as a result of endless mental toil:::

Luana thought about it for a moment, then answered, "No, I can't say that I have."
She walked over and then sat with her legs crossed on the bed, just far enough away to feel comfortable. "What was it, K? What happened?"

:::He was still debating to himself whether he should tell her any more than he already had about his time. Eventually he decided that it was too late for that sort of restraint now. He'd already told her plenty:::
Do you remember...what I said about my people, and how they all know the legends of the Brink? That it's a common concept in my time..?

"I think so," she said. "I remember you saying that I wasn't in any of the old stories."

Right... well, it's a little bit more than just old stories. The Legend of the Brink of Time was given to us by the the woman who founded this free nation. My mother, Luca. She built this world because of the people she met in the Brink.
:::He paused, and looked down at his hands:::
The Brink of Time is the reason we're all alive really... it's the reason that any of this exists.

"I do remember know." The memory was fuzzy, like most of her memories were, and Luana desperately tried to recall the specifics of the conversation. "But what's wrong? Is it something about the Brink?"

The trouble begins when I compair the stories of the Brink to the things that are actually going on in the Brink. Things don't line up...some of the things are really important. If my people could see...some of the things I've witnessed, they'd be crushed. They'd be scandalized.
:::Kal sighed and ran his fingers through his hair::
I think I'd be alright, hiding the reality from them. Maybe that would make things easier. But my next problem is that I'm not the only one around here who knows. My sister, Kara... I've convinced her to keep it quiet for now. But if I gave any hint that I NEVER planned to tell our people, she'd spill it all in a second.

Luana thought about it for a moment. This was his people's religion he was talking about. How would people in her time react if that were suddenly taken away from them? "I can only imagine."
She remembered meeting Kara only briefly once. "Why would she do something like that?" Luana was concerned as well as curious at this point. "What would she tell them?"

She'd tell them everything... and in a way, I understand her logic. It's the truth... our people deserve to know the truth. But at the same time, is that really the responsable thing to do?
What if it destroys them? Are they better off not knowing...?
:::He rubbed at his temples, not looking at Luana anymore::

She briefly thought that she must look something like that when she got one of her headaches.
"Personally, I'm against lying, but maybe sometimes telling the whole truth isn't really right either." She thought of her angel and the pendant around her neck, which she had kept secret for months.
"I'm glad I don't have to make that call, but if I did, I think would look at the worst case scenario and then decide if it's worth it. If not... If not, then maybe it should just stay a secret."

I've been over that in my head actually... and the worst case scenario for this thing isn't pretty. The trouble, once again, is with Kara. I don't think I could convince her to keep it quiet.
::still rubbing:::
My people... are also sort of anticipating Kara and I showing up in the Brink. There's a theory that we, like our mother, are dieties, and so we too will have the ability to enter the Brink one day. But that's all a load of crap, as your generation used to say.
:::But then he corrected himself:::
Well... the diety thing, I think is crap. Obviously, we HAVE appeared in the Brink. No one knows though... not even the elders. Kara is dying to prove that she's as worthy as our mother though.
