"Really?" Maia asked. How much did sneakers cost, she wondered. Was it worth the trouble? "Okay, you can keep the receipt." She was bound to lose it, she was sure of it.
She looked up when Dari spoke. She looked at the box, considered it, and beamed. "Perfect! Lets buy it, then we're off to buy shoes!"

Dari smiled. He was glad he had found something satisfactory so quickly. He took the game up to the cashier and pulled out his card to pay before Toby could fight him on it. Toby huffed in frustration and tucked his wallet back into his pants.
"Big shopping day, huh?" the cashier asked.
Toby was used to responding for Dari so nobody saw the black teeth. "You have no idea."
Then they were off again, out toward Payless.

Maia was a bit confused, and a bit amused by their antics. "I'm supposed to be buying," she informed them. "Don't you guys want to look around too? Maybe you'll find something you want too." She wanted to buy them ice cream if there was a place in the mall.
"Ooh, what color do you think I should get? Blue?"

"You have more important things to spend your money on," Dari assured her.
Toby waved a hand dismissively. "We have plenty of games."
Out at the shoe store, though, they were out of their assumed element again. Toby grabbed a metal contraption off of a nail at the end of one of the aisles and gestured to a bench with small mirrors at the ends. "You ever measured your feet?" Because flipflops tended to just come in small, medium and large.

Like what, the selkie wondered. Buying something they could do together seemed fun, and having fun was important when your two best friends had a stressful job like they did.
She sat on the bench indicated, shaking her head. No, she'd never needed to. "Is that what that's for?" she asked.

"No. It's an elaborate public torture device." Toby knelt and brought it to her feet. "Yeah, it's for measuring. Here, put your foot inside."
He guided Maia's foot into the device, pulled in the top and the sides, and declared, "You're a seven. So we find the shoes that are sevens and you can pick from those." He took her foot out and handed back her flipflop. Dari appeared with a pair of what he was sure were the feet of footless tights.
"You wear these when you try them on, because people are borderline insane about germs." He offered them out to Maia as well.

At Toby's teasing, Maia rose an eyebrow and giggled. Torture devices in a shoe store? She doubted it. She did as asked. When finished, she took her flip flop and stood, looking around for a seven on the shoes she was looking at. She took the sockthings.
"Well, germs are gross. I heard a lot about cooties and how boys are supposed to have them." She glanced at Toby. "You don't seem to."

Toby laughed. "You know, as a child, I was a registered cootie-shot physician."
Dari laughed slightly and shook his head, going with Maia into the aisle with her size. There were a lot of heels, a lot of flats, some sandals and boots, but there was also a half-wall of sneakers. Toby joined him. Dari knew nothing about brands.
"Here, try these," Toby said, offering out a box of pale blue sneakers. They were a good brand, decent for support and comfort. Sometimes stores like these carried crap and hid it in with the good stuff. That was part of the reason he preferred to help rather than sending Maia in alone.

"What's that mean?" Maia asked. Shots were no fun, but they made children healthier most of the time. And they got stickers! "You made people immune to cooties?"
She took the sneakers and put them on. They were different than what she normally wore, but not uncomfortable. "I like them," She said. Something else had caught her eye, pair of boots. "I'll buy these too," she said.

"Nah, cooties aren't a real thing. Kids pretended to give a 'shot' by drawing circles on each other's arms. It was just a silly little thing." Toby looked down at Maia's feet. "Are they comfortable? Can you feel the support, like right here?" He lifted a foot and gestured to the arch.
"Make sure you try them on first. Just looking nice isn't enough. You want to be able to walk in them."

Sometimes the silly things were the best things. Children seemed to know that better than adults did. "They're perfect," she assured him. They were comfortable and supportive, and the right color. .
"I don't think I could walk in them," she admitted. "I'd fall and break something." Important, like her face. "Help me pick a pair?"

"I couldn't tell ya," Toby admitted, "I hear chunky heels are easier, like those." He gestured to the boots. "but I've personally never worn any?"
"Not ever?" Dari asked.
"No. Not ever."

Maia considered Toby's suggestion. She sat on the try on bench, slipped them on and zipped them up. She stood, unsteadily. "Huh. How do women walk in these?" She asked. They made her a bit taller, but she didn't think she was brave enough to take a step.
"Why would he? He's manly."

Sometimes it was difficult to read Dari's emotions behind a pair of sunglasses and the shade of a hat, but his smirk and the tilt of his head said plainly that he was being cheeky. Toby gave him a look back, then returned his attention to Maia.
"Just practice, I guess."

Ah, so Dari was teasing. She grinned at Toby. She sat back down, removing the boots. "I'll practice. Come on," She took the socks off and returned to her flip flops. Time to purchase, then they could find a food place.
Or a shop the boys wanted to look at. Whichever came first.
