If Kara had been anyone else she might have rolled her eyes. There he was, the sort of boy (man) who any mother would love to have as a son-in-law and he wasn't willing to take the chance. Granted, he had more or less pegged her daughter down correctly. Even with Miyuki, she wasn't willing to stop traveling yet, but well Lin was still young in terms of years.
The irony of Earendil's statement about her world though was that the main reason why both Ren and Kara agreed Kin and Lin wouldn't work (besides the fact the boy needed a spine), was that Lin's heart was here in the Four Lands.
"Earendil... you can't keep it a secret forever, not because she'll figure it out, but because knowing Lin she'll come to some sort of completely wrong conclusion if she finds out something is up but doesn't know what it is."
Because unfortunately her daughter was that dense.

Earendil looked over at Kara. "When that day comes," he told her seriously, "I will tell her. But until that time, I can't put her into the position where she feels she has to make a choice. If I tell her, and she doesn't want to make me feel bad - which would be just like her - she would go out of her way to try not make things awkward, which just would make it awkward. But she wouldn't be able to act as if nothing were going on, as if nothing had changed, because she knows how callous that would make her look."
He sighed. "If there were a chance, any at all, that she felt about me the way I do for her, I would take that chance, and I would tell her. But I know it is impossible. Not that she can't, but that she doesn't. Besides," he added, slightly exasperated, "if she hasn't figured out by now that something is going on, after the way everyone was bugging us today, then she never will. Honestly, she couldn't figure out why I even stood up for her at Ulani and Ulrich's house this afternoon. She really had no idea that they were teasing me more than her."
He shook his head. No, he was certain she wouldn't guess anything was up.

She looked very thoughtful, not because she fully agreed with Earendil, it was just really hard to explain to someone who wasn't family what was going on in her daughter's brain.
"Because it would make no sense to her, well besides the fact denseness sort of runs in the family."
Kara hated to admit it, but honestly she was like that too. It took a confession straight out before she and Donovan got anywhere.

"Sense?" Earendil chuckled softly. "Where is the sense in love? My father has already told me that I've taken leave of my senses. Everyone else has been silent on the subject. There should be no talk of sense. Would it even occur to her, the possibility?"
He looked at Kara expectantly. "And if she even considered the possibility, what would be her response?"

"Lin respects your culture and your boundaries too much to toy with the idea, which while admirable is a bit frustrating when you know she'll be spending a good portion of her life here... to the point where she's living here."
Kara knew this, Lin had a lot more trouble finding the middle ground between what had been called the traditional ways and the 'modern' world. Her daughter could use technology, but much of the frustration had come from interacting with people.
"If she were to consider the possibility," Kara shrugged, "I have no clue, but I would imagine she would be quite awkward, she's not use to someone outside of family loving her."
Of course seeing as most normal males would find her too much, it wasn't really a surprise. Lin, didn't do dresses, dates, or heaven forbid flirting.

"Frustrating for you on her behalf, or frustrating for her?" Earendil pressed. "She's never commented on the boundaries of our world ..."
He trailed off, thinking back to the conversation they'd had the day before about interracial marriages, and how awkward it had been for him to explain his stance on the issue.
"I tried to tell her yesterday," he murmured quietly, "that ... I don't care about racial boundaries, to a certain extent. I would not agree with elves marrying the creatures of Meklor, for example, but other than that ... but I think I just ended up making a fool of myself. It just ... she just didn't understand what I was trying to tell her."

"Frustrating for me," Kara replied, "Lin has, dare I say resigned herself to how things are. Not that Lin would call it that."
No, she would imagine her daughter would call it, just accepting things the way as they were, but she was young, she wasn't old enough to feel the loneliness that could come with such a lifestyle.
"That you were trying to tell her you have come to a point in your life where if you fell in love with someone not an elf, it wouldn't bother you? Accepting if someone else gets married and getting married yourself are two different things."

"Yes," Earendil nodded vehemently. "Yes, that is exactly it! But I don't think she understood, in fact I'm very certain she didn't. And having brought up the subject once and failed, I don't think I could do it again. Besides," he added, looking a bit sad, "it's not really so bad, what we have right now. We're spending time together, traveling together, still having adventures together ... what more could I ask for?"

Kara was half tempted to suggest Miyuki calling him Daddy one day but she didn't dare.
"Little else..."
She supposed considering it all he had it pretty good, not many people can say they could still be around the person they had fallen hopelessly in love with.
"Still, think about it for the future. With Miyuki along as well, it'll complicate things."
Both her and Donovan agreed in best case scenario, Earendil would become an honourary uncle, in worse case scenario the Daddy questions were going to appear.

Earendil closed his eyes and breathed deeply. "I know," he murmured. "Out of the mouths of babes ... I know. But I will deal with it when the time comes, then. I'm not going to force the issue. At best, she'll be surprised and maybe think a bit, at worst she'll go back home. Either way, it won't be an ideal situation. I know that the way things are isn't going to last forever ... but it's enough for me right now just to have the situation that we're in."
He didn't ask more than that. He couldn't.

Well, Kara mused quietly she supposed that was the best she could hope for. If there was only a way to planting the thought into Lin's head without giving Earendil away. Well, she supposed she would just have to pray things worked out. Though she had to mentally snort at the idea of Lin going home. Her daughter was far too stubborn for that.
"Fair enough, just to make sure you know," Kara murmured, "Though I doubt she would simply just go back home."
No, she could only imagine the many things that could happen.

Earendil nodded. "I understand. She is a bit stubborn that way, she doesn't let anything get in her way."
He smiled faintly, thinking about her, but then suddenly he frowned again. "I do have one request to make of you, though," he said, turning back to Kara. "Is there any way that you could speak with Donovan and ask him to stop his teasing? It serves no purpose, only frustrates me, and is very rude to both me and Lin. I will speak to Ulrich myself if I have to, but I somehow doubt that Donovan would listen to me."

Kara couldn't help but giggle, she knew that he found it frustrating, but he didn't know Donovan all that well.
"I already did," Kara replied.
She didn't tell him it was because she didn't want Donovan to scare Earendil off, not that she thought it would happen, but it would make things tense.
"Sorry about that, Donovan is a bit... socially weird. He would listen to you though."

"Listen to me and tell me to leave his daughter alone?" Earendil challenged her. "Or listen to me and actually respect my request? But I thank you for speaking to him already. Maybe now it will actually be possible to visit someone and enjoy myself."
He sighed. "I apologize. I didn't mean that. Well, I did, but ... I didn't mean to make it sound so awful. It's just ... Lin has been telling me about the people here for so long, and I've been looking forward to meeting all of them ... but I couldn't relax for a moment, I couldn't ..."
Couldn't quite bring himself to like the people who were teasing him, which was his greatest disappointment.

"He teased you yes, but he showed you Lin's childhood, what she's like and implied it," Kara replied stopping and looked at Earendil.
Poor boy she thought (even though he was so much older than she), he was going to have a lot to get use to.
"In which to say, he really likes you, and in his own odd, bizarre, way he approves of you. Makes no sense i know, but like I'm sure you've been told he's a bit socially challenged."
She smiled at him, she really did hope he would figure it all out.
"I better go and make sure the twins haven't driven him nuts yet."
With that she turned around and walked back.
