Maia could only grin at Toby's reaction to the display cake. Not real, then? She took his hand and swayed their hands, eyes on another display. Well, if they tasted as good as they looked, they'd be in business. "What do you think?" She asked, looking up at him.
She knew he'd been looking forward to today--free cake! Today had finally come, and they were closer than ever to the big day.
A woman seemed to be waiting for them. She had a tray of mini cupcakes. "Hello," she greeted, smiling at the two of them. "Here's eight of our most popular flavors."

"What do you mean? We like the cake here, and they can decorate." He gestured to the displays. "How could we go wrong?" Famous last words, right? Hopefully he hadn't just jinxed them.
Toby took his seat at the private table and plopped down to receive the cupcakes. Maia was right, he was definitely looking forward to free cake. However, he was also looking forward to their wedding. The two things compounded on each other.
"Ooh." He lifted the chocolate one and took a bite. He offered the rest to Maia. "This is kind of cheating. We've been here before."

Maia grinned at him. "We can't," she said. Even if everything went wrong, even if there was a freak hurricane the day of their wedding, it'd still be perfect.
She took her seat, smiling, first at the woman who'd brought the cupcakes out, and then at Toby. She took the cupcake half offered to her, taking a bite.
"Only a couple times," she said, after she'd swallowed. "This is good," she added. But then, chocolate had always been he favorite.

Toby sniffed the second cupcake he pulled up. Hmm.
"Champagne?" he asked the employee, pointing to the tiny cake. Then he took a bite. "Ooh! Raspberry inside." He offered the rest to Maia, licking his lips.

"Yes," the woman confirmed with a nod. "It's got a lovely flavor--" He could see that for himself.
Raspberry? Maia took the rest of the cupcake and took a bite. She paused, savoring it. Mmm! It was perfect. She swallowed. "We're going to have a hard time deciding," she said. And they'd only tried two so far!

"Well, you could always get a different flavor for each tier!" the woman offered, "Or you could get mini-cakes, or cupcakes."
"So basically, it's going to be harder than we think," Toby teased as he picked up the next cupcake and took a taste.

A different flavor for each tier? Maia considered that, and looked to Toby. "Chocolate and vanilla with raspberry might be good, so everyone's happy." She was thinking about Seamus. Poor guy. She'd introduced him to sweets, and now she wanted to make sure he wouldn't get too sick.
The cupcake Toby chose was tangy and sweet--lemon! Maia took a bite after, making a bit of a face. She looked thoughtful, then shook her head.

"Naw, come on. That's boring! You only get one wedding cake if things go right."

"Not in cake," Maia shook her head. She smiled at him though, "I've never tried fruit flavored cake before," she added. But she'd heard cherry was supposed to be good. It didn't sound it.
"What combination would you like, love?" She asked.

"Really?" Toby asked It seemed strange that Maia had never had fruit-flavored cake. He'd have to make some with her! She liked fruit well enough. He eyed the cupcakes still on the plate, knowing that more still would be coming.
"Well, I don't think I can decide just yet."

"Really," Maia confirmed, grinning at him. Just chocolate, vanilla, and she'd helped make a cake made of marshmallow. She took a cupcake from the plate.
"Not yet?" She took a bite, offering the other half to Toby. Pretty good! Carrot cake!!

Toby took the cupcake and popped it in his mouth. Really? Carrot cake? Who had a wedding cake made out of carrot cake?! Well, it was tasty either way, and she had said it was their most popular flavors, not their most popular wedding flavors.
"Oh, so vegetable cakes are fine with you, but lemon isn't?" he teased.

It didn't feel right to be going on a mission without Maia, but she wasn't required to come. Ever since the whole incident with Alex trying to kidnap her, she had been reasonably concerned about ghost missions. It wasn't required, so here they were, pulling up on a fort that was tentatively "closed for refurbishing." The refurbishing was real, or at least it had been, but at that point things had started going wrong. Someone had woken up from their slumber and the historical society would liked it cleared up "as discreetly as possible." Apparently there had been ghost hunters in before, but the activity had been nothing like this. People were told to stay out, what with the sounds of gunfire and explosions and the spirit pelting people with rocks.
"There's a lot of anger here," Michael said casually in the body of the van. He was invisible, just a haunting himself for now. Apparently they were all going to need to sign in, so he was reserving his energy to appear solid and tangible for a while.
Toby shook his head. "I can only imagine."

There'd been sightings reported by the people working, but they had been vague and never seemed to describe the same thing. A number of them had sworn they'd seen bodies laid out in uniform. Yet others had described a figure with burnt out eyes. Others still had only described noise. The sounds of screaming, of gunfire...of explosions that seemed to have real reactions.
There was a woman waiting there at the desk. She was wringing her hands, and it seemed like she'd rather be anywhere than where she was. She kept glancing behind her, eyes wide. Why had they put her in this position?! The place was bloody haunted! She'd get the ghost buster people to sign in and hopefully, be allowed to leave.

Toby, Dari and Michael exited the van entirely solid. Living humans were bound to find something or another strange about Michael, but that wasn't the point. He had to pretend to be living, at least for a little while. If they had cameras inside, he couldn't just appear without being on the official papers, but seeing the clerk, Toby thought she might not actually care. Clearly she was terrified. Little did she know that the ghost was coming to her front, not from behind.
"Hey," Toby said, trying to keep it light but fast. "I'm Toby, and this is my brother Darren and out friend Michael, and we're here to solve your, uh. Pest problem." He offered his hand over the desk and Dari smiled and waved. Michael just watched. He himself was not tangible, not yet, not until he needed to be. He didn't want to expend all of his energy now and not be able to fight back against something if it really was throwing rocks at people.
