Maia hadn't spent much time with Holly yet this visit. So when the sprites seemed settled in, she had opted to prop open a book and read to the toddler. ...Said toddler wasn't having it. About five words into the story, Holly had squirmed off of Maia's lap and into her boots.
"Poppy! Puddle jump!" She called. "Poppy!"

Toby had been working on the report with Dari when Holly called to him. He perked up immediately and looked over in the direction that Maia had taken the toddler.
"What's that, Honey?" he asked. Poppy-Something. He hadn't heard right.

Holly went over to Toby. "Poppy, puddle jump!" She repeated. Stories were good, but puddles were better! "Now? Please, Poppy!"
Maia closed the book and stood, following after the toddler. "She doesn't feel like sitting still," she said, grinning at Toby.

"Oh, okay. Stay with Maia while I get my shoes on." He wasn't going to destroy a new pair in the water any more than he was going to wear his destroyed pair all week. He retrieved them from behind the tent and could be seen stepping into them without bothering to untie them. He emerged with a hand out for Holly. "Come on, let's go."
He seemed to be talking to both the nymph and to Maia.

Holly waited as patiently as could be expected of one so young, taking Maia's hand and swaying it. When Toby emerged, she released Maia's hand and went over to him. "Let's go!" She echoed, taking his hand.
Oh, was she invited? Maia smiled. "Are we going to the creek?" She asked.

"Yeah," Toby said, "I mean, there weren't puddles last time, but there's the river itself. You'll probably want to take your shoes off."
He happily took Holly's hand, and halfway there pulled her up into his arms to make for a quicker commute. When hey arrive at the creek, the tiny sprites were already playing in the water. They seemed so happy! Toby was glad. He was pretty sure that Reese was happy too, even if he didn't want to say it.
One flittered over to Holly and called: "The baby!"

"Probably," Maia agreed. "It's not to cold for her, then?" It was Autumn, after all... Maybe not. She followed Toby happily, and paused when they reached the creek. The sprites seemed to be really enjoying themselves. Good!
At the Sprite's call, several looked over. "The baby!" They echoed, zooming over to Holly. One rested in her hair. "Hi baby!" It said.

One fluttered up to the baby's shoulder and began to braid tiny strands of her hair.
Toby laughed. "Look how popular you are!"

Holly'a eyes were on the sprites, trying to follow their movement. She looked up and tried to catch sight of the one on her head, before looking to the one on her shoulder. "Butterfly!" She declared. She looked around again. There were so many! "Want to play?"
"They're too little to jump in," Maia explained. "But I bet they'll play other games with you."

Another skimmed her feet over the surface of the water as she flew across it at high speed, leaving tiny little twin wakes.
"They're going to stay here," Toby said. "They live here with you now!"

Going to stay here? Holly turned to look at Toby. "Poppy live here now too!" She insisted. She held out her hand for a Sprite to land on; when one did, she giggled.
"Hi baby!" He trilled. He flicked a drop of water at her.

"You know I can't, but they'll help take care of you, okay?" He was glad the sprites were taking so kindly to Holly, but they seemed grateful to just be out of their condemned woods. Nobody could touch them here. He had assured them of that himself. Reese wouldn't allow it.

The nymph bit her lip. She looked at Toby, then at Maia as if asking for help. "Don't want Poppy to leave," she said.
"Hey, we'll visit again," Maia promised. The poor thing really had gotten attached to Toby, hadn't she? "Ready to play in the water?"
