Like I said, in 4e you can make any kind of race and have them act as you please. The stat changes made to the characters dont affect how you act at all.
I'll do some recruiting around the forums. In the mean time, don't worry too much. The best thing you can do when picking your character for the first time is simply focus on how you want to be in combat, then build your character from there.

Where can I find info on classes and races that isn't as obscenely confusing as the books?
The books are about as straight forward as it gets. I'd suggest looking at the D&D Essentials books if you're still having issues. They're still 4e rules but the classes are explained and designed a lot more simply.
