What do you need help understanding?

And that blows chunks. It's sad that family can't always be close, especially since they're suppose to be the first people you can turn to.

Um, everything.... gonk

I really don't get it at all. When I tried to read the books before, it just left me feeling overwhelmed with a bunch of information that was too back-and-forth for me to grasp. It seems extremely complicated, which is why I need to start from the basics. I know what D# means, and I get how to roll. That's about it.

That's why we're doing this piece by piece. First is simply rolling your stats. Like I mentioned in the 'scrap paper' thread, the way you roll for your stats goes like this:

1. Roll 4 D6's
2. Take the lowest number out of the rolls
3. Combine the remaining numbers, this is a stat.

So say you rolled a 6, 3, 2, and 4. You'd remove the 2 and add 3, 4, 6, making your stat roll a 13. Repeat this process until you have 6 stat rolls.

Yeah, I managed to get that part. Its all the other stuff that confuses me. Having to choose extra skills(like knowing an extra language), advantages and disadvantages(Like weak physical stamina due to being raised in a house where you spent your time questing for knowledge, and instead having a great sense of logic and deduction), and positive and negative traits (Extremely obnoxious for negative, extremely attractive for positive)

When I did it before, I had to do all that stuff, and then we were given all these points that we had to split between such things.

Oh yeah, I also lost as to details like the setting(Medieval, modern, post-apocalyptic) and race(Is it restricted to the stereotypical D&D races, or can there be, say, half-minotaur)

4e is a LOT more simplified than that, no worries. D7D hasn't been too detailed since AD&D, both for better and worse. But first, let's just worry about getting your base stats rolled up. We're taking this step by step.

There are tons of races in D&D, even cybermen (Warforged). Take a look through the different players handbooks, I believe there are indeed rules for a minotaur, either in one of the main players hand books or as its own update. I can help you track it down if you wish.

4e?
D7D?
AD&D?

lol, the more I try to learn the more akward I feel.....in the meantime, I'll get my rolls in once I figure out a decent character. We should also try to get more people. It won't exactly be much of a game with just us three. How should I advertise for recruitment for this particular game?

4th edition. And the others, I'm at a loss as well.

D&D* not D7D.

Simply put, AD&D is short for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, it was the second edition. 4e (and it's current revision, known as Essentials) is short hand for Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition, which is the current environment. You can find most of the books on Pbay, if not 4shared has everything.

Advertise it as an RP designed to re-created the 4e experience on a forum. Also, where the ******** is Travis!? He was into D&D if memory serves.

Also, don't worry about designing your character too much just yet, until you have a much firmer grasp of the kind of character you want to play and your base stats.

As for the setting, it's intentionally vague, as I constantly change things up based on the players. Flexibility is a DM's greatest ally. If you want something slightly more firm, think predominately medi-evil with post apocalyptic sprinkles here and there. (As well as other potential hidden elements)

Yeah, but I remember looking at races in the book I read before(which was 4e, I'm not use to all the shorthand) and I have an issue with all the constraints. Like, to be an orc or half-orc, you have to be all brutish and stuff like the stereotypical orc, and aren't allowed to be a scholar or businessman, at least without some sort of penalty for not sticking to the stereotype.(When I did the game before, making a sophisticated orc was just not possible)

Question now is, I want to go with a sophisticated character that is boar-like. If you've played the Dragon Quest games, think of the orcs from that game. What would that race be, r is it not allowed?
PostPosted: Tue Sep 20, 2011 2:53 am

That had to have been 3/3.5. Orc's aren't even in any of the 4e handbooks, unless they released them in one of the Essentials books. And 4e is mostly class driven, there aren't any jobs really to worry about. (Which kind of sucks on some levels, I miss having Alchemy be an actual job and not just a feat)

You can make any race and class combination you want and have them act as you please. The only time there's an issue is if you pick Paladin as your class and act as anything but Lawful Good. But I always viewed that as a stupid rule, as you can be just as dedicated and driven by a cause that's Chaotic Evil as you can Lawful Good, so I always house rule that Paladin's can be whichever alignment they chose.

Honestly, just go to 4shared and search for the books individually. It's a slightly bigger pain in the a**, but it's reliable.

I don't like being forced into cookie-cutters or molds. How about I'll just be a boar dude with Goldmember's wardrobe(Minus the short shorts and rollerblades) who talks like an old scholar despite being a few years shy of 30. No stereotypial personality, no stereotypical class, no stereotypical anything, just some guy who is there to hang out with and give the other characters some interaction.

I'll give it some thought, but I'm still not decided on whether I want to do this. neutral

Races and classes aren't really for cookie cuttering so much as setting some form of identity and stat modification. Granted, options are limited comparatively to say AD&D, but there's still tons of variety.

Think of it like this: race helps determine your base attributes, movement speed, eye sight, stat adjustments, minute details like that. Class just determines your spells and abilities that you can chose and learn.

That is precisely the reason why I couldn't make an orc scholar. Because the effects of race on stats prevented it. But, I've got an idea of what I will do for my character, I just need to learn all the bajillion things in the books. Starting with race.

God I hate accidentally choosing edit instead of quote. You gonna do a recruitment drive while Ryu and I figure this out? I'll do what I can, even if I end up only being some npc-type character that just exists to interact with the characters and isn't actually part of the fighting or whatever.
