The Name Game
There has been some interest as to what the name for the new ship is going to be, and right now there isn't a name. So here is the deal, you submit your name idea, and once we have enough for a vote we will all pick which is our favorite. *shifty eyes at those who have been known not to vote in the past... I know and you know who you are...*
As all of you know our Lightning Class XGR-Y7A, Ira, is being traded in for a nice big freighter. What class of ship it is I don't know and am not very good at making them up either. I'm pretty sure (if my bad memory serves me right) it was Orange who finally came up with the ship title and class last time.
That wasn't what I wanted to talk about... Our ships name was Ira. For those of you who have not read everything on the first page of the RP dealing with your RP-mates, and all of the other fun stuff I have on there, then you might or might not know that Ira is/was the name of a Polynesian goddess of the sky. I just bring that up for some of you (like myself) might want to stick with the whole deity thing, while others of you might not.
Picking a Name for the ShipAs all of you have probably guessed I read Sci Fi novels *gasp*, only good Sci Fi novels (am very picky). Anyway, here are how some other ships have their names picked.
The Technocracy (League of Peoples series-James Alan Gardner): All ships are named after trees from Old Earth
Private Shipping Firms (Vatta's War series-Elizabeth Moon): Most ships named after people (two names), few named after inanimate objects or feelings
I wanted to come up with a few more examples, but those are two have a system of naming ships, and thus is easier than just naming them random things, like is done in the Firefly 'verse.
Side NoteWe don't have to pick a name right off the bat. We can have it that the ship already has a name, or because it has never been used before it doesn't have a name. If we can't come up with a name fairly quickly then I say with go with the whole it doesn't have a name thing, and not sweat it out until it does.
Of course if we decide that it has a name before we get it that would mean that we have to come up with and pick a name very quickly.
I don't care either way, and whichever we pick is fine with me.
Happy Hunting.
