Hi, everyone.

I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with a little problem i have. See, I am wanting very badly to volunteer with my towns local Symphonic Orchestra ( playing, of course) but I don't know how to answer one of the questions I am being asked. I don't know what Grade level I play at! I am a Bassoonist, with a range of almost two octaves (I'm one semi-tone away) Playing from the low ledger line Bb up to a high ledger A. I sometimes struggle with sixteenth notes, however they are do-able. I recently started playing Bach's "Badinerie" and am finding it to be about right for me. Playable, but still enough of a challenge that I actually need to practice, rather than just wanting to.

Sorry, just though I should add that the part I am playing for Badinerie is usually the one preformed on the flute.

oboe oboe oboe oboe! stop calling me a clarinet!!!

I know exactly what you mean! Once we were at this big event for all of the bands in our school district, and one of the clarinet players yelled out "That's a cool looking clarinet!" it's terrifying that they're in band and have no idea what an oboe is.

I play oboe, and thankfully, no one has called it a clarinet. I love my ducky. <3 My main instrument is flute, but now it's oboe, and for marching band I play trumpet. =3

I played Flute for six years and then, after many months of begging my BD, he finally let me play the Oboe. =D
I've had people call it a Clarinet...A Basoon...and a Flute...

Go bassoons. >=P

Does anyone have any suggestions on improving tone in the super-upper range? (Like, I'm talking high Bb above the piano's "middle C" to the D shortly above it. My bassoon has that high D key...) It sounds strangled, sort of, and I almost passed out while playing a C earlier.

I've only been playing for six months, I use a medium-hard reed, and I play on a 220 Fox artists' model, if that helps any with advice.

Thanks~!

I switched from clarinet to oboe in 7th grade...people were like 'oh its just like a clarinet, it just sounds different.'

WRONG.

There's no real trick to this actually...
I played flute before I switched to Bassoon ( I've only been playing for a little over a year now ) so I was already used to putting a ton of air through my instrument.
For me, it's just how I position my mouth on the reed. Perhaps blow faster air? Like I said, I'm not sure what instrument you played before or if you just straight up started on bassoon. I find my background as a flutist has made hitting high notes clearly very easy for me. I have a small background in piccolo now so it's made things MUCH easier when getting up to a D when the time calls for it.

biggrin And I have a Fox 220 model from my school. Brand new actually. Just got some of the thread cut off this weekend so it doesn't take me 15 minutes to pull it apart. However when I go off to college in a few months I'm looking to get a 220 Long Bore Artist model! I think it's just gorgeous :3

OH yeah happiness biggrin I get to play oboe in band this school ear.
The band director wouldn't let me play it last year DX Terroble.
But me and meh friend went to see if she would let us play basson.
Would she? No. She said blah blah blah you ave to have a provate teacher along with concert band. Blah blah etc.
But I managed to get her to allow me playing oboe since i played it in middle school smile

GO OBOE!

I've been playing bassoon for two years and i also have a 220 Fox, when your trying to get out the higher notes take in more reed and for the lower ones take in less. Reeds are all very different which you probably know and some will catch the higher and lower notes better that others. With practice your tone quality usually gets better. Patience when learning bassoon is key.
*Other pieces of advice use more air from stomach instead of trying to adjust your mouth to get those higher notes out. Wears out your mouth... especially after long periods of playing. Private lessons and band camps are good investments. Beware beginner books mostly not written by bassoonists and sometimes have wrong fingerings! ~*~ Fun Fact: Takes almost 11 years to make a fox bassoon! ~*~ (old video can look up on youtube) biggrin

I learned the oboe sophmore year in high school. Now I'm gonna be a senior in the fall and I can't wait for concert season. I love the sound of the oboe, it's really pretty and whatnot but then it's also sharp and piercing at the same time! biggrin

I wish I could make my own reeds though. I don't know how to customize them to my embouchure if I made my own. :/
