Now, I could be wrong, but Tidus was a dream of the fayth, right. He was based on a memory they had from their lives in Zanarkand. Shuyin was a lover to the best summoner in Zanarkand during the war and a star Blitz player. Tidus is probably the fayth's memory of Shuyin, hence, they are one in the same to them, but have no memory or interaction with each other.
