You were supposed to be watching a pot or a tray over the fire, and get distracted. Roll a D4 to see what you were cooking and how bad the main course of the meal is burned! The soup boiled over and it looked all right (despite about three inches of burned goo and a pot that no longer can be used). Unfortunately, no amount of salt or pepper is going to hide that charred taste that has permeated throughout the entire batch.
