"Their steeds?" Lin asked.

Well she had a rough idea what he was referring to but she wanted Aethos to confirm it. She couldn't imagine anyone taming a Roc like they would a horse. Then again what did she know about Rocs?

Aethos blinked at Lin. "The rocs," he said, as if she should have already known. "Why are you so surprised? Does not one of your friends also have a roc as a steed? That is what she and Prince Earendil arrived on yesterday, was it not?"

Earendil chuckled. "It is, Aethos-sola, but it is not like the rocs that are on this island. Haldia's roc is a manifestation of a spirit that lives within her: in essence, it is a part of her."

Lin nodded, "Instead of having magic, they are granted summons in the form of marks, which represent also their family history."

Completely interesting, though she supposed it was like back when elves were granted magic abilities instead of being born with them.

Aethos nodded. "I see. Our people have long lost the use of magic, save for the magic of fire. When we left the old world, there was but one gift-giver, and we could not take her with us ... so rather than leaving our people without magic, we chose a life without it instead. Still," he added, looking around, "we do well."

Earendil tilted his head. "You are not born with magic?"

Aethos stared. "Our people have never been so," he replied. "Is this so surprising to you?"

"A little," Earendil admitted. "For centuries, the Light Elves have not needed a gift giver ... they are born with magic, and their gifts change with every generations, as the Dark Elves."

"All elves now are born with two gifts, generally awaken in childhood. Well it varies," Lin murmured thoughtfully.

Then there was Rhea but Rhea was a special case. She wondered when it went from needing a gift giver to not needing one.

Earendil tilted his head curiously at Lin. "Varies?" he asked her curiously.

"I was nine," Leyenda spoke up from where she had sat down across from Earendil. "Celeb is seven now, his magic should be manifesting any time now ..."

"I was younger," Rhea put in. "I think Mother started suspecting that I had magic when I was already an infant."

"And your mother didn't manifest until she as much older, but that could have been circumstances," Lin added.

Well that and something as subtle as languages for all Lin knew maybe she always had it and didn't notice until Elros came to visit talking in the ancient tongue. Now that Lin thought about it, she never wondered what Shael's second power would be.

"And you were a special case,"
Lin replied, "You are just full of magic because of your background."

Rhea nodded. "Though that wouldn't have done me any good without me traveling and meeting so many other people with different powers," she added. She turned to Aethos and smiled. "I was fascinated by your sister when I first met her. I was very young, and I had never used fire magic before."

Leyenda blinked, then leaned closer to Lin and poked her shoulder gently. "Who is his sister?" she asked in a hushed tone.

"Aerin, a fighter from Haven. Your mother wouldn't have met them, they came long after she was married," she murmured softly, "Haven attracts all sorts of people..."

Or it was just luck, she couldn't quite tell at the moment.

Leyenda giggled as Rhea kept talking with Aethos. "I'm really looking forward to visiting," she beamed. "Though I'm curious to know how she ended up there, if she came from here."

Kelirahc smiled and slipped his hand into Leyenda's. "We will be visiting when we get back to your land," he murmured.

"Well.... I know part of the story, of how she ended up in the Four Lands, and I know how she ended up at Haven... Triton my brother was there when she and her partner Caranthir was hired, but everything between that, no clue what happened."

And that she wanted to know, she just hoped that Aerin would be forth coming.

"Though that does make Caranthir more mysterious," she murmured thoughtfully, "How did he know about this place?"

Caranthir looked like a typical Light Elf which was interesting of course Lin realized she was going to have to be direct and request he simply say no if he didn't want to answer. She didn't want to be dancing around with him.

Leyenda laughed. "Then going to visit my grandparents will be just as new and exciting as all the traveling that we're doing here!" she exclaimed. "But it is a good question - how would he know about this place? And how would he have come here? And why? I mean, if no one knew about other lands ... and if he did, then why wouldn't he tell anyone about it, when everyone there knew that Rhea would be coming with us on this trip ..."

"Not that anyone asked him," Lin replied honestly, "Or think to ask him. Caranthir acts a bit...."

She tried to think of a good word for it, before settling on one.

"Like a goof. He teases Aerin, he seems so open, but at the same time no one really knows a lot of about him. Well beyond the rumours that is, he's old... give him that. How old I don't know, I only know second hand from Sir Valdemar."

Lin sorted through all the other odd details but didn't come up with much.

"Besides, to be honest would you tell people of a place where half of it is full of creatures who kill and torture for no exact reason? Besides... Aragost has traveled around, he mentioned it in passing, and he didn't tell Rhea where to find everything."

Besides what was the fun in that?

"Though I also have questions for him too... and an apology."
PostPosted: Sat Jan 09, 2010 7:34 pm

"An apology?" Leyenda was surprised. "What could you possibly have to apologize for?"

To her, they hadn't done anything at any point of their trip that anyone would need to apologize for. After all, they hadn't done anything they hadn't expected to do - other than her getting married to a complete stranger, of course.

"I'm actually not supposed to learn the ancient tongue," Lin admitted sheepishly, "When I was much younger I once asked in how a magic book worked, which I discovered the power of language. Anyways... the point is Aragost had hoped the ancient tongue would have died out, remaining only with the few from the First Age, and made me promise not to learn it."

She shrugged a bit, she didn't feel too badly about it, since she figured that was his idea.

"But I don't think he expected there to be a whole society that still used it."
