"A dragon?" Lin looked interested.
She had never seen a dragon of this world, of course because it was dangerous. The closest was a footprint of one and the moment that was seen Aragost had moved her and Adan to a safer location.

"Don't worry about it, Aerin will take care of it," Ulani assured Lin with a smile.
Ulrich nodded. "Aerin specializes in dragons," he explained, "and as long as it wasn't a big one she shouldn't have any trouble."
Kanis blinked up at Ulrich. "Is that why they call her Dragon-Killer?" she asked in a small voice.
Aras's eyes lit up brightly. She wanted to meet Aerin now - maybe she could learn from her!

Is that what Aerin was called? Lin had to think about it, she knew very little about the two newest fighters, even though Calthier was more approachable, she didn't think he was anymore forward.
"Is that so.... I didn't know that," she murmured thoughtfully, "Actually I know very little about them."

"No one does, really," Ulani shrugged. "They were hired on from the Eastland, I believe Cindy was there ... I'm sure you noticed Aerin's orange hair? There are rumours that it's from the dragons she's killed, from being in their fire ..."
Ruque blinked at Ulani. "Wouldn't she get burned?"
Ulani shook her head. "She is a firecaster ... usually they still have some vulnerability to fire, but Aerin ... seems completely immune."

"Hmm... I've never seen an elf with red hair," Lin had to lean back and think about it, "Who knows... with the dragons here it might be possible, I think what made me to a double take more is that she has freckles."
Now Lin was not that good a biology, but she had heard at least about spots and freckles at least. She knew humans got them from being out in the sun a lot, pale humans were more prone though it did depend on genetics but...
"It's just about as curious as the fact she doesn't really sleep and hasn't in a long time."

Ulani and Ulrich exchanged a glance. "Well ..."
"You could always ask her about it," Ulrich suggested. "She's not as unapproachable as she seems."
"As for the sleep," Ulani added, "it's something we elves can do. Awake and sleeping ... the body is alert and awake, and the mind reacts, and yet your body is resting and re-energizing."
"Sounds good, but it comes at a price," Ulrich added, "which is why most people don't use it if they can help it."

"What is the price?" Lin asked uncertainly, "I mean... it sounds like she's been doing this for... decades if not more."
She never asked that neither, but she was pretty sure it was far longer than it was probably healthy. Even if an elf could still re-energize while doing this.

"For however much time they use the Elven Sleep," Ulani answered softly, "they must spend equal time in real sleep once they are finished. I have used it a few times myself, but never for longer than a week ... and I think I frightened my parents when I did that."
She chuckled softly. "The feeling of waking up after it is ... disorienting."

The thought sort of frightened Lin herself, she was pretty sure it was dangerous to remain out like that for so long. After all what would one do for food or drink? How would they survive?
Could Aerin sleep that long?
Actually now that she thought about why would Aerin stay awake for so long knowing that was the price? There had to be a good reason for it.
Lin rubbed the back of her neck, "Another mystery..."
Though she was telling herself it would be childish for her to try and pursue this mystery. She wasn't a child anymore, she couldn't get away with asking question on a whim.

"Of all the mysteries we've had here," Ulrich chuckled, "I think this is one of the lesser ones. The Sleep, and the need to use it, is a question indeed ... but I think the bigger question might be why is she so mysterious."
"Cold is more the word I would use," Ulani shrugged.

Lin looked thoughtful and shrugged, "I would use mysterious, because she might not be so cold. It's just first impressions."
Even though they had been around for a while, one could say the same with Aragost. After all Aragost was considered dangerous at one point, not that he wasn't, but he was considered even dangerous around the very people he was supposed to be helping.
She recalled being warned about him when she was a child.

Ulrich chuckled softly. "You obviously didn't try to get to know her on the trip," was his only comment.
Celebor looked thoughtful. Perhaps he would look into this woman, see what she was about. "How long has she been here?" he asked.
Ulani looked to Ulrich. "Two years?" she guessed. "Something like that. Don't thying she's ever spoken to anyone but Caranthir in depth ... and there's another odd character."
"No worse than Halmir," Ulrich chuckled.

"It's a bit awkward trying to get to know someone on a trip you've taken for the first time," Lin replied back, "Though I admit Caranthir did do all the talking. I think he's the reason why Triton said, see for yourself, instead of telling anyone what they were like."
Still... Lin was pretty sure that Aerin wasn't as cold as she seemed, granted she didn't have childhood to hide behind anymore while talking to her. That was probably what had made it easy for her to talk to anyone else.
"Halmir's gotten better... he's not like when I first met him. Not that I got any of his allusions at the time."

"Halmir has indeed changed," Ulrich nodded seriously. "But I suppose that having a wife and child does tend to change a man."
Ulani looked at Ulrich expressionlessly. "You changed a lot," she deadpanned. "You used to be so serious ... so ... sane."

Lin blinked once, blinked twice and then thought about it really hard. Really, really hard, she thought back to her childhood and all the things that had been done and all the stories that had been told. Finally she gave up, pointed to Ulrich and asked.
"He was serious?"
Seriously, (no pun intended) Ulrich was... well it could be serious she supposed but not without taking a few humour shots first.
