"Love Poppy more than Rover," the nymph beamed as Toby continued to read. "More books," she insisted. She pulled a second one out of the trunk.

Once again Toby kissed Holly's head and took out the next book. There were far too many to get through today before she got bored, and that was apparently a good thing.

Holly repositioned herself on Toby's lap. "You brought lots," she observed. And other things besides! What else had he brought for her? What exactly was a coat? "I like calling Poppy from the box."

"I like it very much when you call me from the box," Toby said, looking down at the little nymph. Soon enough she'd be all grown up. He had to enjoy this and her little calls as much as he could.

"I call Poppy everyday!" Holly announced. She looked at each picture carefully as Toby read. "No Poppy in this book," she frowned slightly. "Fish!" She pointed to a picture.

"That is a fish! Did Reese teach you about fish?" Toby asked. There was probably a body of water somewhere in the forest, but he was delighted that she was learning so fast.

"Reese says don't go too close!" The toddler mimicked the guardian's stern face, then giggled. "Lots of fish in river!" She turned her eyes back to the picture. "Poppy like fish?"

"Well, that's very smart. You shouldn't get too close!" Toby said. Immortal or not, drowning was scary. "I do like fish. Do you like fish? They move pretty cool, don't they?"

Well, if Poppy said not to get too close, then she wouldn't. She nodded in agreement. "Not too close," she promised. "Like watching them! Reese says it'll be too cold soon. No more fish, just ice. I don't like ice!"
Not that she knew what ice was. But if it made the fish go away, it was enemy number one.

"Well the fish will come back!" Toby said. "The Earth has seasons, see. You have spring, which is warm and green, and summer which is very very warm, and then autumn, which is how it is now, and then there's winter which is very cold. Sometimes nymphs like you go to sleep when it's cold, but we bought you some coats so you can stay warm and awake!" There was a book in there somewhere about the seasons.

Holly blinked. They came back? Reese hadn't mentioned that! "Good!" She said, and cranes her head back to look at Toby. "Fish come back like Poppy did!" Oooh, Poppy was talking about something else now. She fell silent, listening carefully. "Like warm and green best," she said.
"Coats?"

"Yes, they'll come back, and so will I," Toby said with a smile. "Oh!!" He leaned over, taking Holly with him a bit to pull a winter coat from the trunk. It had a little faux fur collar and zip pockets and everything. He held it open. "Here, feel."

Toby's promise to return had Holly smiling brightly. She paused when he brought out the coat, eyes widening.
She took hold of it, marveling at the soft material. She wrapped her arms around it and held it close. "Thank you, Poppy!"

"You're welcome!" Toby said with a smile. "There's a few more in there that are more warm or less warm. It all depends on how you feel, so we wanted you to have more than one."

The nymph began to pull the coat on, struggling to get her arms through the holes. She managed and grinned. "Yay!" She cheered. She looked down at herself, seeming to admire it. "Pretty!"
She turned to hug Toby, standing up but not leaving his lap.
