Toby smiled as he stood and leaned up to kiss Maia's temple. Whatever it was, he was grateful for it. His fingertips worked at the wrapping paper's edges. What in the world could it be? He didn't need anything new. He had everything he needed.

Once the lid was opened and the tissue paper removed, the gift came into view. It was an old fashioned projector. "When they brought stuff over from my place, they brought this," she said. "I made sure it works."

Well. That definitely wasn't something he had been expecting! He smiled and lifted the projector from its box like a treasured item and turned it in his hands. Neat. A look into the past.
It was only then that he noticed the slides.
"What are these of?"

"Some are of me," Maia said, then paused, "There's a lot of the beach. All sorts of things. I don't recognize some of the places in them." She leaned over and kissed his cheek. "I thought you might like it."

Toby's smile broadened.
"We'll have to look at those when we get back. Thank you, love." He kissed her temple.

Maia smiled and turned to kiss his cheek. "Let's go get breakfast," she suggested. "I was thinking we could stop by the bakery, if you'd like."

Toby gave another happy hum. He laid the projector on the bed and went back to packing his overnight bag.
"That sounds great."
He put the bag aside and got dressed, then picked it up and nodded for Maia to follow. He needed his toothbrush at least.

Maia smiled and followed Toby. She placed a kiss on his cheek. "It was hard, keeping the surprise a surprise," she admitted.

"Where did you hide it?" he asked. He knew better than anyone else how hard it was to hide gifts from your live-in family.

"Yes, come on." There was no need to brush your teeth BEFORE breakfast, right? He could brush right after at the hotel. "Where are we going exactly?"

"The Regal hotel," Maia said, and smiled at Toby. "It's supposed to be really nice. We could go out to dinner, too."

Toby hadn't been there, he didn't think. They didn't usually use hotels in AZ when HQ was much more safe. "That sounds nice. Thank you for planning this, love." he leaned over and stole a kiss.

"So you forgive me for waking you up on your birthday?" Maia smiled at him, taking his hand. She returned the kiss. "Happy birthday, love."

"Of course. I'd forgive you for anything." He grabbed his keys as they passed them, tucked into his shoes, threw on a jacket and took Maia's arm with his elbow as they headed outside.
