I have the whole series in Chinese, but I'm pissed at the fact that I'll probably be in college before they release all of the volumes.
Hell, I might be in college. How many are there?

I hate sensationalist, paranoiac faux-experts who prey off people's emotions to make a hefty sale on a probably-useless product by spewing out poorly-rationalised misinformation without any basis in scientific fact. sweatdrop

...Researching some holistic product a client of mine bought in hopes of helping her sick dog.

Sue? surprised
sweatdrop

I just can't believe these people paid $175 for this stuff. I can't say that it won't do anything to help the dog...or, at the very least, it shouldn't hurt. Fortunately, these are clients smart enough, at the least, not to listen to all the nonsense these people put up.

I don't know. I'm all for complimentary medicine, using alternative modalities that have some scientific basis. I'm also fully willing to accept that some treatments out there just haven't been studied enough and may very well help... But when it comes to the, "ZOMG, you must feed all organic tofu to your dog because commercial dog foods are loaded with toxins! Vaccines are toxins! Medications are toxins! If you're not feeding your dog organic seaweed you may as well be killing it! Your vet will tell you to euthanize your dog, but if you use our herbals there will be a miracle!" people...just...make me sick to my stomach. Particularly because there will be people desperate enough to fall for such schemes.

Fear does scare people into doing stupid things......kind of like alcohol makes many people unstable and more likely to do stupid things because their judgment is blinded by a medium.. maintaining calm is difficult when one is inexperienced with a field, too.. people do not like to feel helpless and desperately want control a lot of the time..

That it does.

I called the people back the next day and spoke with them about my impressions on the herbals, and they ended up agreeing with me that it was pretty questionable.

Unfortunately, as of this morning, the dog was doing even worse and we had to euthanize. sad In the face of decisions like that, I can see why people are desperate to clutch at any promise of hope. I just wish there weren't so many unscrupulous people waiting to take advantage of that desperation.

Also, noted from Zero Omega (somehow I missed the original quote from backtracking), there seems to be a big problem on balancing between RIGHTS and SAFETY. It was evident in the Patriot Act when the government said they could spy on us to keep us safe, but in effect, it also took away some of our privacy rights.. where to draw the line seems to be a problem.. when to yell at the people who carry around weapons and use violence and when to critique ourselves for supplying them?

I had a discussion about that in tenth grade when we were reading/studying Night by Elie Wisel, a biographical-novel about the Holocaust. We were asked if the government told us they had to block a group of us away from people because we were in a time of national crisis, would we allow them?

Then, what if they wanted to secluded us further, would we allow them? Then, what if we had to be pulled out of society and moved away, just like the Jews and others in the death camps, would we allow the government to move us?

It's a shame to say, but in a national crisis the government can do, basically, whatever the hell it wants. Then again, it's been, what? Four and a half years since 9/11? I can understand if we initiated the Patriot Act and had it enforced to the extreme back then, but nowadays it's just ******** up.

It really is sad that life supposedly has to come to this.. that we have to choose sides, prioritize, and not have a healthy balance of both anymore..

Why do cities like LA get the reputation for being high crime? Is a big city life with little room a negative influence any many people? What is it about the big touch city ethos, or is it more like self-fulfilling prophesy, where if one is told something enough times and there are not many other depictions, the individual becomes what people say they are?

I think it has to do with the fact we've become to submissive to the wills of criminals and gangs that they can kind of run the city how they want. That and we just have such an access to things that can do harm and really don't do much about it.
People who are poor (around poverty level or less) have a higher likelyhood of turning to crime. Though the US claims to be the land of opportunity, that's sometimes not that true. It's easier to turn to crime to make a quick buck. For some, that's the only way they see it. I mean, I don't think there are a lot of middle/upper class folks going out committing crimes here and there. In major cities such as LA, there is a dense population. More people means more resources are taken up and generally, not enough...especially for those suffering at the poverty level. If you have money, you don't need to worry about those things. If you're one of those poor people, there is no room to get resources or move to a nicer place. Also, not to mention the living costs of California and other big places such as New York or Florida.

I think Fitzgerald explains it best in The Great Gatsby. The American Dream is, indeed, dead.

Is that what that book is about? I have heard lots of people talking about it.. it is a diffiult read??

More or less, the fact that people in the highway between East and West Egg are the poor who never have opportunity. Then the rich people (West Eggers, I think) shadow their actual lives with their money and resources. This whole really messed up lifestyle that is completely ignored by everyone except for Nick because he isn't corrupted by money.

At least that's my interpretation on it, it's Shouj's favourite book so she could probably give a more in-depth analysis of it. I still need to really finish it. Is it a hard read? No, not really.

Is it the type of book that simply reflects life and/or gives a solution to the problem?

I need to actually read it again...and I don't remember details. Maybe after summer classes are over, then I can re-read it. Last time I read it was in 11th grade...so...02/03?

Ah, I thought you read it recently, like in the past year or so. xd
Pssh, no way. I don't read. cool TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL. talk2hand

Pffffft~
SparkNotes, ftw.

I found out about Sparknotes way too late in school, but by then I wanted to do everything myself without help...

It does console me a bit to know that while we don't get stuff like Japanese bands much over here, Southern New England has a pretty ferocious music scene.

Just please don't hurt yourself... I believe corsets, as in Pirates of the Caribbean, were damaging to internal organs.....

Hello, my name is hollywood_addict and I have no sense in the text of a joke and take everything too seriously?

Areku-chan! I thought I saw you at work, and since it wasn't you, it made me realize how much I miss you already! crying
..how the hell would you have seen me at work? rofl

As for missing me, I don't even know what's going on anymore. I'm kind of stressing out over everything and confused on what to do.

Would it help if I go on a statewide rampage sometime after work tomorrow? I figure seeing your daddy on the news/in the papers/shrugging off the best suppressive fire the US Army has to offer would cheer you up.

That would be interesting.. just go after guilty people, ne?
