With Black/White, I'm assuming trades are still completely possible with HGSS/Platinum/Diamond/Pearl?

its kind of a one way thing you can only do after you've beaten the E4 in B/W.
pokemon can be taken from Gen4 games but then they have to stay on B/W
you also need 2 DSs to be able to do this.

Seems a bit... 'ouch'... about it being one-way... I thought in some of the older games, the two-way transfer worked, even with the generation issue, I just thought it stopped you entering the trade if you had pokemon (or pokemon with 'invalid' moves) in the group that were not in the trade partners generation. Surely if they did it once, they could have done it again...

No, you've never been able to trade between generations.
actually, Gen 4 (Diamon/Pearl/Platinum) was the first gen to introduce the ability to import pokemon from a previous gen... and it was a one way trade.
In gen 1 - 3 you were never able to trade with the previous gen, so you were limited to whatever was on the current versions.

with Gen 1 (Red/Blue) it was the first game, and there probably wasn't meant to be sequals, so the connection only allowed specifically for it to trade between Red and blue
so it wasn't so much that G/S couldn't trade wit teh last gen, it was just impossible for R/B to establish the connection.
however, with Gen 3, they switched systems, and the link cables worked different ly, so G/S couldn't properly use the new connection method, and was also cut off.

and if you really think about it, there aren't all that many version exclusives to trade with friends for, I think there should be a lot more, and it should be noticed right from the beginning... so you can start off with completely different pokemon than a friend your playing through with does.
