"No. By the time I was human-shaped, it was a risk to go out at all. If it wasn't for Toby I probably never would have gotten out regularly. There's pictures of me in makeup somewhere, but I'm glad I don't have to any more."

Cody looked concerned. He couldn't imagine how hard that must have been. He took Dari's hand and gave it a squeeze. "I'm glad Toby was there," he said.

"Me too."
Cody didn't know how serious it had been, and though he did want to share, a potential death was not something you shared with someone unwilling.

Cody lifted their hands to his lips and kissed Dari's. "Tell me about your life before me," he invited.

Dari smiled to Cody and watched him for a moment. Where should he start? What did Cody want to know?
"It's a bit sad," he warned.

"But it has a happy middle," Cody said, giving Dari's hand a squeeze. "We're together, forever. Literally forever." He smiled then. He couldn't think of anything better. "Are you going to make me cry?" He asked.

Dari let out a lot breath. Okay.
"I hope not," he said, and then continued: "I have the memories of three people. We were struck by debris and pulled into Earth's orbit, and we lost pressurization as we fell, so everyone inside... exploded. Died. I was three different samples randomly put together from wall scrapings. I happened to be a lot of memories, some free will, and only a little bit of consciousness. I started to eat through things, and they thought I might be acid, or The Blob, or something horrible. I don't fit the conditions for life. I'm just a fluid full of things they couldn't define."

Cody looked at Dari in horror. So his parents had not only died, but they'd been scraped together to create him! The poor guy! "I think I know where this is going," Cody was frowning. "I don't like it. Though, do they still work at HQ?" Maybe he'd visit them on the full moon and scare them right and proper.

"Who?" Dari asked. Some of the people who had been around then did, but most didn't. The FBPI had a pretty high turnaround rate.

"Whoever decided you weren't important," Cody said, then. "If they thought you were garbage..." his frown deepened. "Toby told me he saved you. But under what circumstances?"

"Oh, uh. No. They didn't think I was garbage," Dari said. "They wanted to keep me. There aren't many alien artifacts on Earth. They didn't think I'd killed everyone, but they didn't know where everyone had gone, and they kept reinforcing my container and I kept eating through it. I needed certain things to gain consciousness, so I just instinctively ate them. I ate through a table, lots of glass, some metal..." He shrugged.
"They were discussing potentially incinerating me, since they thought I was probably dangerous and I had destroyed a lot of equipment. It wouldn't have done anything but made me eat the pit of the building out and climb back up, but fire does tend to destroy Earthly things. Toby was head agent, though, and he demanded that they allow him to spend some more time with me. We built a relationship with an enormous language barrier, he helped me learn, and helped me become something that the others might accept. It's why I look so much like him. I used him as a basis for my human form. I didn't have a form before then, I was just... fluid in a membrane. Generally round."

Incinerating?! Cody glared. He turned his expression away from Dari briefly. "I'm glad he was there to help," he said. "I wish I'd been there to protect you," he added, looking back at his fiancée. "When did you move in with him?" He asked.

Dari shrugged.
"Well, they couldn't really have done anything to me," he said with what he hoped was a reassuring smile.
"I moved in with Toby once I'd learned to put on makeup myself. It wasn't too hard. I had a projector within a couple of years. He spent a lot of time with me in the lab when he realized I was alive. He gave me dictionaries and pictures and read to me. It was nice." Now his smile was sweeter and gentler.

"That doesn't change my opinion of them," Cody muttered. He turned and kissed Dari's cheek. "That explains the dadmode," he said. "I love you," he said. "I want to do things you've never done before," he added, and smiled at him softly.

"Of course it does. It's not something you can explain to your human boyfriend, though," Dari said. he leaned over and kissed Cody's cheek back.
"We already do, plus things I've done that I've never been able to sense. I have some memories from back on the home planet too. They're not mine, but they're... bittersweet." He had been about to say 'nice,' but that wasn't entirely true.
