I remember halfway through 5th grade, the earliest you can start to play, is when my class had a song with high notes, and I got them pretty quickly, seeing as how I'd only been playing for like 4 months. Just trying to get them and practicing for awhile helps a lot.

fonbebbles Miyoko Clarinetti gdkgirl55 I have only been playing clarinet for about one and a half years. I like to play i not very good i have trouble playing high notes but eventualy. rolleyes I've been playing the clarinet just as long as you have biggrin ! anyways, to play the high notes takes patience, I started to learn the second and third octave in december, I was able to get the second octave down in the middle of janurary, in march I started to try the third octave and after one month, I was able to play the third octave (the first chair and second chair couldn't even play it last year in sixth grade! nor could they really play the second octave :3) anyways, so it takes patience, I suggest you start from the highest note you can play, hold it until you run out of air, then play it again in a half note value, then procede to the next note (which will be the first high note you can't play) which octave are you having trouble with? second oct or third oct? -miyoko actually the altissimo (spelling? xp ) isn't as easy as just blowing. try changing your mouth: if you have never gotten the high notes out, try closing up your embochure(as you can tell, i'm not good at spelling). if when you try to play you get kind of a fuzzy "zzuzz"y sound then try putting your first finger on half of the first hole. make sure you use lots of fast air that is the main thing though ^those were just some tips if they don't come out rightaway. o yeah and don't forget that A flat key! i was able to get the full range the first semester playing...... blaugh granted that it didn't sound so great; i got it xd sweatdrop the prodigy kids got it perfect at about the same time-but they are band wierdos........... yes, tightening the embouchure, the higher you go, the tighter it gets, the lower you go the looser it gets. It's also good if you could hear the note in your head, it'll come right away, my high C was sometimes never clear (plus I had lessons in the morning T.T and it was on saturday too) so my teacher told me to hear the note in my head before playing it, and the C sounded great! biggrin so it could be your mind isn't hearing it...and I can't remember how it makes the note not clear... anyways, I hated band before I joined in, and I got the second octave before first semester ended it (last year in sixth grade, first year...the memories) i was uber proud of myself!! ahaha :3..band weirdos o_o isn't it band geek? lol

using money helps? wowie, i never knew xD
well, i've never cleaned underneath my clari's pad but once my co conductor made a student bring a lighter to school so she could fix his clari's pad (he really didn't wanna play the day before, infact both of us didn't...we were doing a duet together and we didn't practice it the whole day before the duet and we started to get nervous 20 minutes before it and he brke the pad off his clarinet o_O;, played fine though) everyone was like, "cool a lighter!" xD.
it was during summer school xd

I am new to this guild blaugh
I'm a freshman in high school and have been playing clarinet for six years - but it really doesn't seem like that. I really enjoy my instrument; this year I made first clarinet, second chair in the top concert band in my high school, beating out other freshman, sophomores, juniors (except one, who is first chair) and seniors.
I adore marching band because it's so fun - going through private school during elementary meant that this year in high school I was the new kid, but my band of 220 is a lot of fun, and all of my friends are band kids. I love half-time shows and deplore parades.

The issue has much more to do with the speed of the air, which CAN be increased by pinching your embouchure, but is less succesful, especially relating to pitch. If you tighten it, the air will be forced into the upper range of the clarinet, forcing the sound to double back (creating that infinitely high squeekyness) and sound the pitch 8va or more. This will cause the pitch to bend drastically up, and it won't let you be able to control it's intonation without sacrificing tone and possibly the note itself. First off, increase your reed size, as this will let you focus more air without the reed giving up. Never go more than a half size stronger at a time, and if you want any reed maintenance tips, pm me. I have a tendency to apply pressure to my bottom lip to get my double high G's and C's to sound, but that can ruin your embouchure, and in my case, your teeth (they are steadily bending backward... Damn gums.). If anyone's interested, I'm offering free clarinet advise and lectures via mail. If you ask me a question or want advise about a certain topic, just PM me. I'm glad to help in any way I can, and have more than enough information for any of your clarinet or saxophone needs.

chocovash- :O hm so that explains some things that i do wrong...D: why didn't thee tell me this over AIM? ::shakes fist:: anyways, so basically I don't tighten my embouchure right? I used to use 2 1/2 for like almost the whole year till summer, now I use 3 1/2, so yes the reed size does matter.
ahaha, always correcting me when I'm wrong xd is there something that i do that you'll say is perfect? O_o; I don't think i'd live to see that day (you've heard me play D: terribleeee)
though i've come to realize online lessons sometimes could confuzzle if you daze off...or get confused when you're asked about note values and having to add them o_o now thats embarrassing to say the wrong number....
i'm being random -_- maybe its because i'm sleepy...yeah... -miyoko
