The dirge of the shopkeeper.

Does anyone else ever feel like customers have this strange idea that we're nothing but a bunch of desperate pixel-people who need to sell avatar edits in order to survive instead of actual human beings who are online to have fun? ^^;

I get told things like "if it's good enough I'll pay you" and other things that make me feel that these people think they're doing me a huuuge favor by asking me to create graphics for them in exchange for pixels. Basically what they're saying is this...

Customer: I'll give you my pixels in exchange for your pixels, hard work, and free time. Oh, and I'll throw in some ingratitude and bad manners to sweeten the deal.

Meriko: Um...eat me?

Heheh... I know what you mean, Meriko.
I always try to be courteous and everything, but at the same time, there are some customers to whom I want to say "Make sense, dammit! And read my rules while you're at it!"
I don't want to disappoint my customer because I couldn't understand his/her request. That would reflect poorly upon my shop. So, I must remain calm and walk them through the process.

What do you do when someone makes a request you don't want to fulfill? - ie: a part of the edit that you feel would compromise your integrity as an honest editor (Talking about copyrighted images here...) Or when they request one thing and then turn it around completely - Ex: "I want a background like in your example, but please make it look like a stony field" - two completely different things. Do I go with the example background or the latter request? Do I combine the two?

*hee* I get compliments on how nicely and patiently I deal with the rude and ungrammatical. On the other side of the screen, however, I'm chewing up my keyboard and spitting it out four letters at a time. XD

As for how I handle iffy requests...if it violates the mini-shop guidelines I just politely say no and point to the guidelines as the reason why I won't take the request. If it's something that I personally don't want to do, then I say something like, "I'm sorry but I prefer not to do [insert squick here] edits."

As for customizing, that's part of what I offer at the avatar edit shop that I run with my friend Kimini. ^^ But it's part of the guidelines of the shop that if they don't make it clear to me what they want, I won't be held responsible if the edit isn't exactly what they were envisioning. I am not, after all, telepathic. *hee*

Some people actually think that there are programs out there that we use to make these...and I mean no-skill-required making. o_O; Like I load up the program, paste in an avatar, and then start clicking buttons that say, "Gothic Lolita" + "Pale Blue" + "Blouse: Short Sleeve - Puffed Variation" + "Skirt: Full - Long Variation" + "Lace: Quantity = Lots."

Aiya! That's exactly what I'm saying! Heheh.
*holds up a sign saying "We're not telepathic!"*
Goodness. We spend time on these things... I love doing it when I can, but if someone's rude to me it just ruins the experience. Luckily, I've not had anyone who's.... totally rude. Just hard to understand.
Well, I just hope my customer doesn't freak out when I don't add something in that they wanted but I didn't understand.

I've been blessed so far. Kimini and I have gathered up a nice little group of loyal followers who help us field questions and incorrectly placed orders. And when the finished product hasn't been exactly what the customer wanted, they've still liked it well enough and paid us without complaining. ^^

The ones who give me migraines usually don't make it past my repeated requests to read my rules (there are only three, for crying out loud) or follow my ordering instructions, so I never get to the point where I have to battle them for payment.

I did have one person scam me though. =_=; They sent me a trade, but when I sent them their edit and confirmed the trade, they cancelled it. It disappeared from my pending trades, so I thought they'd confirmed it, but when I looked into the completed trades list it wasn't there. I sent them three PMs, which they read, but they never replied or re-sent me the gold.

Though I'm not a member of this guild, I am a frequent avatar "collector" and I'd like to give my 2 cents. Hope ya'll don't mind.

Anyway, I do my very best to be polite and kind to the avatar artist I'm ordering from.

Afterall, ya'll are doing a service for me. Ya'll take ya'll talent and ya'll time to do this for me. The least I can do is be polite and follow the guidelines.

And tip. wink
