Truth be told, she didn't expect to be back here so soon. But... there was no other way, was there? Coline had been standing in front of a familiar cabin for some time now, the back of her hand raised up to the door, a very strained expression on her face. Was this all there was? Was there really no other way?

After minutes of internal struggle she lowered her hand. "What am I doing? I bet he's not even around..." she whispered to herself. With a sigh she lowered her head, her crown meeting the door rather roughly.

...

Jumping a few steps back in dread, Coline rubbed at her forehead frantically. Her heart was beginning to race and the side of her mouth twitched involuntarily. "S-S-S-See? H-He's not there! Time to go!" she convinced herself, turning her heel for a hasty escape.

Lorika had left around an hour ago, pledging her eternal thanks for his support. He'd stopped telling her to think nothing of it due to the strange effect that sort of kindness had on her. His idea of her as a silly, interfering little girl in a role too big for her had pretty much evaporated over the course of the past two days. This was a time for change, indeed.

Once the curtains were securely closed, Jessie had then gone about reassembling his rooms - around halfway through he'd realised how pointless this was, as the Overseer would be returning to lodge there in several hours. Perhaps if he asked the deity nicely enough he'd be allowed to stay in the living room, if only to ensure that the Overseer had a less destructive time the next morning. True, very few of his things were actually breakable - he didn't care for ornaments and the like - but seeing them scattered around was still an annoyance.

He still hadn't quite finished piecing things back together; he kept being distracted by certain things he picked up that he hadn't glanced at in a while. When the rough tap came on his front door, he'd sat down to read a few chapters of a novel he hadn't touched in several years despite it being a favourite. His hearing, somewhat sharper than a human's but inferior to an animal's, picked the sound up easily.

The clock said it was nearly half past six. The oddities of the day just kept on coming. A third visitor, and in the evening no less! Something important must have come up.

Putting down his book next to the arm chair, he crossed the room and answered the door fairly quickly. Imagine his surprise to see Coline - his dear Coline - marching away back up the slope .

"Coline! Good evening!" he called, with more than a little cheer in his voice.

Halting in her tracks, her posture stiffened considerably, eyes shutting close almost immediately upon hearing the familiar voice. After a few more moments in that position she relaxed, turning to walk back over with an awkward smile. "Eheh... Good evening. I thought you'd left, so..."

Part of her was happy to see him again, but part of her was... sort of not, considering the nature of her visit. Oh well, she was here now. Might as well get it over with. Coline took a quick peek over Jessie's shoulder. "Am I... interrupting anything?" she asked, looking back up at the drow. "I could drop by another time if you're busy."

He beamed at her. "I'm not busy, little one. Would you like to come in, or is there something else you need from me...?"

((LOL))

She actually had to mull over this thought. Should she just tell him straight out? Coline's head lowered. To be honest, she wasn't completely decided yet to ask for the Captain's help, but before she knew it she was already in front of his cabin. Shaking the thought off, she raised her head again and smiled. "If it isn't too much trouble... may I come in?"

Coline paced carefully as Jessie guided her inside. It was only then that it dawned on her; the room was dark. Really dark. She'd completely forgotten about it, although she had to wonder how the drow could maneuver himself effectively through this darkness. Perhaps he was training his eyes to adjust to dim lighting? It's a good trait for a soldier to acquire as not all battles are performed in broad daylight.

Though sadly, her eyes couldn't quite adjust to darkness this intense. Maybe coming inside wasn't such a good idea after all.

Jessie noted her discomfort as she entered the dark room. As such, he didn't close the door.

"I'm terribly sorry about the dark... I really am," he said, remaining in the doorway "There doesn't seem to be much point in opening the curtains at this time of the day, though... and I don't have any electric lamps. I suppose I neglect the fact that I may have human visitors at times."

He stepped out of the doorway a little and tentatively took her hand. "Perhaps you would prefer to speak outside after all? I'd hate for you to feel as if you're shut in a prison..."

Feeling a small wave of stupidity crash over her a light blush crept up her cheeks. The lighting outside did appear much brighter. Taking the hand she thanked the drow curtly and allowed herself to be guided outside. Coline allowed for curiosity to get the better of her, not because she hadn't decided whether to ask him or not, not at all.

"Sir?" she began, head tilting slightly. "Why is your room so dark? You must have really good ey-- I mean, a really good eye to be able to move around so well in such a dark setting."

Jessie looked at her in surprise.

"I had thought it was obvious, my dear, but... perhaps I was mistaken," he smiled, a little doubtfully. "I have obviously neglected that you knew nothing of my people before you met me."

Bowing rather more deeply than necessary in apology, he explained. "My people actually live underground - we are a subterranean race, and share our home with any number of strange monsters and entities the surfacers consider evil. As such... we are adapted to having perfect vision in pitch blackness."

He folded his arms, expanding on the information in a somewhat grim tone. "Darkvision. It is useful, of course, but unfortunately leaves us extra sensitive to sunlight. I have been here so long the sun only occassionally bothers me, but... I still prefer the cool, soothing darkness."

Unfolding his arms, he smiled at her again, reaching out to stroke her cheek gently - just once. "I'm sure you didn't come to hear me give a little speech, though. What is it that you need... if not simply a hug?"
