"Sure." He grumbled, yet didn't bow. Unsane had no clue who Mrumru-whatever was, and as such saw no reason for him to bow to her. Him ... it. He was the goddamn overlord in here after all. Just to be an a**, he gave a half-assed nod and went on forward to catch up with Saiya after leaving his shoes at the entrance. It's not like the landlady'll feel insulted anyway; it didn't look like there was anyone home.

It's not like the landlady'll feel insulted anyway; it didn't look like there was anyone home. She didn't bother to glance back at him, assuming that he'd follow her directions unquestioningly. Behind them, the door slammed shut. Saiya was up on the second floor by now, peeking in doors as though it was perfectly natural and not at all an invasion of privacy. Most of the tenants were out and about at this time of night, anyways. The landlady didn't exactly rent to the respectable types, anyways. Finally, at the end of the hall, her search was greeted with a cry of, " Malkin!" And she disappeared into the room. Just before she vanished from sight, there was almost what could have been a smile on her face.

Unsane totally wasn't paying attention. While Malkin (he'd just assume that was her most generally accepted name) turned and disappeared, the elemental just ... kept walking down the hall. Unless the girl thought about looking out and going to fetch him after a few seconds, he'd have already turned a corner and disappeared into an empty room.
It's there that he came back to the real world and stopped walking.
"... s**t, I lost her."

It's there that he came back to the real world and stopped walking. " ... s**t, I lost her." The room he walked into was empty, mostly; a bare wood floor, fireplace in the corner, a window facing the hallway, a bed in the corner. Someone lived in there--there was mud on the floor, recently tracked in by a pair of men's boots--but they didn't use it for much more than sleeping, by the look of things. Storing stuff was out of the question. If you wanted to keep something really safe in Southroot, you didn't keep it locked up in your room. With all the cracksmiths in the city, you'd have to be really ******** flat to think that would help. "Bang." said a voice behind him, heavily accented, like Malkin/Jesse had been in the desert. "You're dead, mister."

"Funny, I thought dead people didn't breathe."
Unsane took a deep breath. Just testing, you know? There was no reason to panic, it's not like he was holding everything valuable in the room in his arms. He had just walked in by mistake. Beside, the voice could be just as armed as he as.
"For the record, are you trying to make me piss my pants, or you're threatening me with something? I'm not too sure wether I should be screaming or laughing at the joke."
Yeah, Unsane's weapon? Dry sarcasm.

Dry sarcasm. "That's what the men this morning said." the voice explained, apparently not listening to anything Unsane had to say. "Then they took away Nicholai. Mummy said Nicholai was a nice man." A small, round brown face, about at height with Unsane's waist, peered around him and looked up. "Nicholai was going to take us away from here, Mummy said. Are you a friend of Nicholai's?" As an afterthought, the child added. "You're funny-looking."

"You're the midget and you say I look funny?"
Not really a midget, but a kid, which only made it all the more awkward. The brat sounded like he was sort of out of it. Did someone get shot? Kidnapped? Nicholai must've been his mother's lover or something. Unsane had at least the tact to lay off the sarcasm and the natural b***h, though. He had his own kids, and since then, he wasn't much for being mean to people that didn't reach his belly-button.
"Yeah, friend." The demon knelt, staying at eye-level with the kid. Unsane's eyes, as cold as they were, were strangely soothing. Maybe because of the way it felt like looking into a snowglobe, the color within them swirling about softly. Almost hypnotizing. "Is your mom somewhere here?"

Then, his face crumpled. "Mummy went out. She didn't take me with her. 'N been gone a really, really, really long time." His small frame hunched over, and he stared at the floor. "She said she was going to get Nicholai back."

"Uh-huh. So she did." Unsane grumbled. She was probably just as dead or just as kidnapped as that Nicholai due was. He stretched back to his full height and turned around taking a step inside the room. "So, is this where you live? Who's been getting your food since your mother went out?"
The elemental's brain was running. There was something just not right about a kid's mother and possible step-father getting taken away like that. Either they did something, or had something another wanted? Malkin'd prolly know more, or the landlady.

Mummy said to keep quiet." The kid looked up at Unsane, eyes wide. "If she don't come back by tomorrow, I'm s'posed go to Per'sus's pack. But I ain't gonna."

"Huh. Why not? He's gonna eat you or something?"
Per'sus. That was the guy they came here to see. At least he'd have a way to find Malkin again in this hell of a house. The room itself didn't seem to have anything left that was really of interest, beside the the halfling still standing at the doorframe. With a sigh, he made his way back there, about ready to leave.
"Y'know where ... Per'sus is? I was gonna see him, but kind of got lost on the way. What's your name?"

Then, his small brow furrowed with the effort of thought. "Mummy says Per'sus trains dead peoples. He took...he took Twist-tongue and Stitchlimb and the Malkin and Austin Scrow and the Darksaints, all seven of 'em, and Demetrius Gayle." Morgan looked up, eyes wide. "Nicholai says that Demetrius Gaye could turn into a shadow and slide under people's doors, and that's how he got 'em all. But they's all dead now, even the Darksaints. So if'n I go to Per'sus, I'll end up like them, won't I?"

This was getting more and more interesting by the second. Turning in a shadow wasn't all that tricky if you knew the cantrip for it. The others might just be spellcasters as well. What about Malkin? 'No chance', thought Unsane. 'She almost ha d aheart attack when she learned I could make snowballs with my mind.'
"You won't end up like them. You're not gonna die under my watch, I can tell you that much. 'Side Locke, while your mother's gone, you gotta be a man. What kinda good strong man would be afraid of dying? You're more courageous than that, aren't you?"
The kid probably wasn't that courageous, but as long as he could be convinced he was, it's all the same.

The kid's face twisted up in puzzlement, then he shook his head. "I ain't. But...but... Per'sus's clutch don't go straight t'the Wall like--like you 'n me would. They take 'em to Auzoris Court." Morgan pushed his little, chubby fingers together, lowering his eyes nervously. Clearly, this was not a subject to be openly discussed among the natives of Strata. "They do...things up there. The hocuses. Bad stuff." Then he clamped his lips shut, obviously not wanting to say anything more on the subject.

"Look, Morgan." Unsane bent his knees again, for his eyes to be level with the kid's again. "You don't need to tell me about the hocus. I heard just as much as you did about Auzoris Court." Could he lie any more blatantly? Prbably not. "And that's why I'm gonna make sure neither you nor I ever gets to step foot in there, y'hear?"
Unsane gave a little upward nudge at the boy's chin. "But I really need to talk to Perseus. It's important, y'know? Can you at least tell me how to get there? If y'do, I'll teach you how to make the best snowman in the neighborhood, and I'll take you to a fancy restaurant for dinner. More food than you'll ever be able to swallow."
