Oh, here's one.

"I cannot reveal to you what (insert name of Goddess) is, but I can, with absolute authority, tell you exactly what She is not."
This isn't unreasonable to me.

Oaths and whatnot can keep people from telling folks what a deity is- their name, their domain etc, and yet some can still tell you what they are not.

Not to mention the utter awesomeness of negative Theology.

Well, I think what made this statement invalid was the bit about "absolute authority". No one has that, though some people might think otherwise.

Again, I disagree.

Gardner had absolute authority on his theology- rest his soul.
The Pope has absolute authority on Catholic Christian practices.
People who quote authority have authority.

A lineaged Wiccan from Gardner's Coven would have authority to be able to state what their goddess is not as long as it didn't violate their oaths. In Gardner's case- he did as much himself.

Maybe I wasn't clear again. The point I was really trying to make was no one IS an absolute authority on anything. No one knows everything about any particular subject, except, perhaps, their own thoughts and ideas. (Even then, this doesn't always work. A story is a writer's own idea. Someone walks in and asks: "Where are you going with this work?" The author could reply genuinely: "I don't know.")

Since Wicca was Gardner's concept, he could be said to be an absolute authority on the subject. (Even this concept may have some holes in it, if he ever was confronted with a question about Wicca, and replied, "I don't know." We'll not know that unless we had a time machine, so, there can only be speculation on such a thing.)

Though a Pope may have claimed to know everything about the Christian God, for example, this would be a pompous statement, as the entire nature of the divine cannot be known by human beings simply becuse we are limited. This is what I believe, anyway.

I was just saying, people should be leery of anyone who says that they are an absolute authority on any subject and tries to dictate the lives and thoughts of others because that "authority" knows everything there is to know.

Then again, I could be wrong. I don't claim to be an authority myself. confused

I completely disagree.

Unless the author does know in which case they could tell them.

Except- the Pope and the Caetchism doesn't make that assertion. They assert they are the authority of the Church.

Sometimes people do know everything there is to know on a given subject. ~shurgs~ It happens.

I can't tell if that's a compliment or an insult, but in the interest of being an Egotist and a Hubris b*****d.....I'll just assume you wana jump my bones.

As for this "no one has absolute authority bit..."

It's irrelevant to the comment provided.

"I cannot reveal to you what (insert name of Goddess) is, but I can, with absolute authority, tell you exactly what She is not."

I , not even needing a Goddess' name in the insert, can tell you with absolute authority tell you at least one thing which she is not.

A He.

If one were to insert the goddess, then on could continue on in likewise fashion.

Again. Negative theology FTW

I deliberately didn't mention said name, because who knows what kind of things I would be accused of? I already know that there are some here that views the worshippers of said pantheon with contempt. I did not want to attract said contempt. I only included the statement because it sounded as lofty and pompous to me as some of the other "unwise" statements in this thread. I never meant to cause trouble.

I have to go to work soon crying don't drag me into semantics debate, I love semantics.

Before I go:

No, she is a she. She can become a He(being a shape shifter) the distinction of principle gender has been made.

Ergo, in TRUTH she is not a He (although she can BECOME a he)

No trouble. I love a Healthy Debate!

Worst thing to say as a Pagan:

Goddess worship predates prehistoric Animism.

I have a pretty good idea. No matter if I am right or not- I could still come up with some interesting ones you aardvark eater you!

Pish posh.

Personally, I don't see anything to hold in contempt. I mean, it isn't like there is a trial going on. And even if there was- this is an international forum. Whose laws would we follow? Oh! Oh! Can I wear a funny looking wig?

Meh. I don't think so. Depends on the context of the statement.
