I love english horn, my main problem is that all the reeds I can find are too hard for me. D= It sounds so cool when played well, though.

I recently switched from french horn to bassoon yesterday. I love it already.
Anyone got any tips? (:
And suggestions on what instrument to play for marching season?
I was thinking about mello, but I'm not sure.

I hear 'ya. My director has been giving me the English Horn parts and I'm always worried that the reed will not respond. I just hope I can make it sing for our next concert and for playing in the pit. I'm just bursting with excitement for that! whee

I also play french horn and bassoon. In high school, I played the marching french horn instead of the mello... It was an easier switch with fingerings for me. There were actually a couple of trumpet players who played the mellos and later switched to french horn.

I play Bassoon, I started less than two years ago... (Freshman year I swiched from Clarinet to Bassoon) And I'm on par with most of the senior's at my highschool (Who aren't bad by any means). I am picking Oboe up now, Double reeds are great.

Anyone ever try using surfboard wax on reeds vs beeswax? Just picked up some surfboard wax and I had this brilliant idea of trying it on my oboe reeds. I noticed that a couple of the online doublereed shops sell surf wax as well as beeswax, so some reedmakers out there DO use it. I was just wondering if there was anyone here with experience with it.

So true. So true.
~Just as a side note:
I've always wondered why orchestras usually tune to the oboe, and apparently it's because the oboe is always in tune, no matter what. Being sharp or flat all depends on the embochure (mouth shape). I'm not sure if that's right or not because our school's oboist will be extremely flat, push her reed all the way in, and be extremely sharp. I'm not sure. Someone should totally tell me if I'm wrong or not, because I'm not sure.
