In my world stereotypical Russians are either Tall and muscley or they're short, compact and muscley.
...but then again I like watching the Olympic weight lifters xd
But seriously, to me a stereotypical Russian is either one of those two extremes. The tall thin ones died out in the snow and the short ones had the natural advantage of having all their muscle compacted together to protect them from the cold.
Vodka also helped but mainly it was natural selection 3nodding
(TOLD you I was doing Biology... still meant to be doing it)

Umm it doesn't say anywhere in the anime that Rei's a cat-person, i don't know about the manga though.
and yes i think Kai is half Japanese... hmm -thinks-

It emphasises Kai's Japanese half in the manga.
So maybe he gets his shortness from his Japanese side and his brawny musclely Kai-ness from his Russian side?
