But first, there must be talent. Practice yes, but without talent... practice is useless.

hmmm.....
So your theory is that if I were to study art, practice drawing -- eventually I could make amazing art?
Well... any ideas where to start?

omigosh, Ama, that's great! I'm so happy for you! <3 I'd never be able to do that; I'm horrible at fishing. I don't have the patience. xD
*ahem* as for art... I wouldn't really know where to start, if you're starting at the beginning... I've always drawn, so I'm not really sure where a starting point would be.
I would start with stuff like simple shapes and still-life stuff, just so you can get used to drawing what you see, you know? Draw something that's in front of you, and go really slow, and use light strokes, too. If there are any dolls in the house, or stuffed animals (teddy bears are good), draw those - they have a decent sense of proportion, so you can get an idea of where joints and limbs go, until you can get yourhands on a good Figure Drawing book.
A great book for starting, if you're not ready for a class, would be 'Basic Figure Drawing Techniques' edited by Greg Albert. (ISBN: 0-89134-551-5)
It's about $18, but it really has good examples by really good artists, who explain the process really well. It teaches you to break the body down into basic shapes and such.
Also, try www.howtodrawmanga.com - they've got great tutorials for those who want to dive right in. :3

Thanks whee
I came in 10th at Bass'ken, but it was good enough for a trophy. Which was my goal, so I'm really happy with it.
