Oh my God. I think I've died and gone to heaven! biggrin I've been playing bassoon for 5 years now and I loooooooooove it. I plan on playing it in college and beyond :] I've never seen so many bassoonists in one place... that's not a double reed convention. [Oh and I play tenor sax in marching band]

sugarnew182 Yeah, I play Bassoon and thought that we double reeds should have a place to talk. Question. What do you guys play during marching season. I play Mellophone. Bassoon/Alto Sax. That's how I roll.

So... I play trombone, but I'd really like to learn oboe. Do you guys have suggestions as to what brand/model I should look into?

Tacet Metronome So... I play trombone, but I'd really like to learn oboe. Do you guys have suggestions as to what brand/model I should look into? As for the oboe itself? Just see what you can rent, or whatever your school has. I'm playing on my school's crappy plastic selmer that doesn't have nearly all the keys (missing the third octave key, lots of trill keys, low Bb key...), but once you can start playing well, you can get an okay sound out of the worst of instruments. (I'm actually interested to see how I would sound on a nice, wooden oboe...but I'll need money first. xd )
As for reeds, I don't recommend store-bought reeds, I have issues with them. I've never ordered any oboe reeds online, but I did order an english horn reed. It was good, just too hard (reedwise, not playing xd ) for me.
It'll be really different compared to trombone, but if you're interested, go for it! =D

I play alto sax for concert band, but my band director is letting me use his second bassoon to practice for next year. I've only been playing for about 4 months, and I can already play a chromatic scale from low (bell) B flat all the way up to one octave above tuning B flat.
I play Tenor Sax for marching band, but my band director might switch me to alto, (which I have played for marching before) or Baritone.
P.S. I was also interested in English Horn (Cor Anglais) It's so mellow sounding and sweet. It sounds so much better than your average oboe. Anyway, is it useful to learn this instrument? Is it fun, hard? Etc. Thanks in advance!
(Please PM me, or post it and PM me, because I'll probably forget!)

Well, I played oboe my freshman, sophomore, and junior year of high school. I thought I did great... but then the oboe died, so I was forced to play French Horn instead.

I play Oboe and have been since the end of 6th grade, during marching season I played flute and man I love flute as much as the next double reed but once i went back to playing oboe i noticed that flutes are always sharp, and some don't even really care about it either. Makes me mad.

Im an oboist all the way in germany! luckily i haven't had to march yet, (it's to cold here) so yeah.. but next year i have to march and i'll play clarinet, or saxophone!
Can i get a WOO_WOO for oboes?
btw for all you ppl who are looking into english horn, if you think oboe or bassoons are tempermental wait until you get to these things. One of the toughest things music wise i've ever done.
