Moving to a different spot wasn't of much help, and the wooden trident was the cherry on top of the cake of frustration. That was it. She couldn't take it anymore. She wanted her trident back. Being apart from it for so long almost felt like... like not seeing the Captain for a whole week.
Yes, that was an accurate comparison.
And as such she found herself standing in front of the Armory again. Faced with the same two guards. Armed with the same silent hostility. And a wooden trident. But it seems she needn't raise her voice to catch their attention now. In fact, she didn't need to speak at all.
"Look who's here." one of the guard cooed. He glanced up at the wooden trident and nudged at his partner. "Aww, look, the little girly's playing soldier. Ain't that just adorable?" The two broke into an ear-shattering chuckle, eliciting a deeply wrinkled brow from the young recruit. If only...
But this wasn't the time to be getting worked up. Retaining her composed stance after a few more minutes of blatant mockery, Coline spoke. "If I had a perfectly sensible reason to enter, would you let me?"
The guard's brow raised in interest. "Go on?"
"My trident." she answered promptly. "It's in there." Then, very hesitantly, Coline lowered her head to a bow. "Please. It's the only weapon I own. It... means a lot to me."
Humming thoughtfully, the guard turned to his equally defective partner. "I dunno... what do you think, bub?"
"Weeell, it doesn't sound like she's lying--" The recruit's head rose upon hearing this. "--an' I do remember them issuing standard tridents to the combatants..."
Despite her calm expression, her eyes shifted between the two guards restlessly. Maybe they weren't so heartless after all. "So will you let me in?" But the glint of hope in her eyes soon faded.
"Oh, we'll let you in..." The guard inclined towards her. "If you let us escort you, that is." He gave a quick nudge at his partner before speaking further. "'Should be fun, right? Looking through all those nice long tridents..." He was looming uncomfortably close over her now. "What do you say, hm?"
Coline stared up at the two men, seemingly unfazed, and sighed. "I should have known..." she muttered under her breath, massaging her temple with her free hand. Raising her voice to a more audible tone, she answered. "If that's the case, then I suppose there's no other way."
"W-Woah... So... so you'll actually do it?" he gabbled in utter shock. The two looked at each other for a second before hurriedly unlocking the door, gesturing for the recruit to go inside, beaming. "Then, please. C-Come right in!"
"...Are you out of your mind?" Her face twisted in disgust without as much as an effort, brow furrowing dangerously. "I'm not going anywhere with either of you!" And with that she turned heel and stormed off. To think she were to call those two her comrades... how sickening!
She'd regained her sense of calmness during her walk back to the Training Grounds, however, a single phrase resounding in her mind. There was no other way...
There was no other way.
