Well i just need to slap whoever told you that. Anime is a style of animation deriving from japan. With a focus on realism and lifelike action. It is VERY popular not only in Japan itself but Widely here in America and Europe as well. Youtube has been cracking down on alot of it since google took over because of copyright issues, but do a search for Ouran Highschool Host Club, if you want to see what real anime is. Anime's topple tons of issues and are amazingly enjoyable to watch (as an adult watching "cartoons" would not seem like an enjoyable passtime to most people). I love it. The art, the issues, the music. There are very few Anime series out there i have found in distaste, but i am kinda bias.
You are thinking of Hentai. Hentai in japanese means Pervert. And when you mention Hentai in relation to Anime. It is refering to a Porno.
