Bakura tensed up, one hand raising up as though he was going to strike Rei. He hesitated, seeing how pitiful she was. "Rei..." He said softly, looking off to the side, lowering his hand. "You are not a problem. I didn't mean it like that. But you being here, right now, is. I'm... I have things I need to do. If I don't, they'll all just pile up on me and drive me insane. It's already starting to. Already has." Bakura closed his eyes. "I don't mean to push you away, but I have to if you want to be safe."

"If you die, nothing else will matter." Bakura said gravely. "Don't you think that I feel the same ******** way as you? If you die, Rei, I will too. You are not a hassle and never will be. And what do you think I'm going to do once I finish the business with Kul Elna? I need you, Rei. I need you to be there..."

[Hah hah.]
Bakura held Rei close, sighing. "We just need to get through this all. Things will be okay later." He said softly, and would have stroked her hair or something, but noticed that his hands still had blood on them. "I need to go to the well."

Rei looked up to him weakily. Her pupils were pinpricks like his when he had a sesiure. Her body shook for a moment before she colapsed to the ground in heap. Her body wasent strong enough to stay upright or even awake for long.

Bakura managed to keep a hold of Rei, then scooped her into his arms. He went to where his horse was waiting, and put her over the back of it. He still needed food. Taking the horse by the reins, he walked in front of it as he led the way to the market. Not in a good mood, he went into an inn, killing the owner and getting the food he needed.

Bakura got the food in a bag and got back on the horse, before shifting the cargo so that he was sure that neither Rei nor the food would fall off. He rode to the oasis, where he brought Rei inside and put her back on the bed, feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted. As he was getting the food outside, he allowed himself to lean against the outside of the house, trembling. He hadn't expected it to be that simple. Sure, he had had to kill a few people, but he was willing to kill every person in Egypt if it meant getting to stay with Rei.
Looking in through the window at where Rei was resting, Bakura felt himself tense up, shaking in rage. She looked so hurt, so weak. It was, indeed, his foolishness that had gotten her hurt. If he had just let her come with him, then the dogs wouldn't have attacked, then the men would have come to find just an empty house.
No, that wasn't exactly right. If there were three men who had come after him and one, maybe two who were with Rei, then that would have been about five in total. And he had had quite some trouble with the three who had come after him, he remembered, glancing down at the bandage on his chest. Would he have been able to take on five? No, probably not, especially if he was also working on keeping Rei safe. Those stupid bastards had whips, he remembered.
-Flashback-
Bakura had been riding along, wondering if perhaps he was being a bit too harsh on Rei. He would have to apologize later, he decided. He hadn’t gotten too far away when he heard a loud cry from the house. He whipped around in alarm, cursing himself mentally for leaving Rei alone. He didn’t get a chance to try and see whatever it was that was hurting Rei, because instantly a deeply tanned hand had flung sand in his eyes. Swearing, he had fallen off the horse, trying his best to wipe away and blink out the blinding sand.
When he was down, he still had to react quickly. The people who were attacking him—he hadn’t yet gotten a chance to see how many and who they were—were on horses, since he could hear one of the men’s horses’ hooves stamping the ground dangerously close to his head. Rolling off to the side, he managed to get rid of most of the sand, and squinted up at the attackers. Three of them, damn it. Before he could say or do anything, one of them pulled out a thick bullwhip, quickly snapping towards Bakura. It cracked near his ear and he flinched a little bit, jumping backwards to try and get out of the whip’s length. The men laughed and said something in some language Bakura’s didn’t know; it was either some very different dialect or not Egyptian altogether.
Either way, Bakura had no idea as to what they were saying. The three men moved their horses to form a circle around Bakura, and he drew his bladed weapon, which was a sort of mix between a dagger and sword, somewhat like a machete. The holder of the whip cracked it forward again, and Bakura held up his free arm to block it. The whip wound around his arm, slicing neatly through his skin, making him grit his teeth together. He brought his blade down on the braided leather, and though it took a little work, managed to cut through the whip. The man stared at his little half a whip for a moment, then growled, cussing in a mixture of Egyptian and whatever-the-hell language it was. He reared his horse up, its hooves coming dangerously close to Bakura again.
Bakura jumped backwards and bumped into another man, who had gotten off of his horse. The man pulled out a wicked-looking dagger, its blade jagged. “Prepare to die, thief.” He said in a heavily accented voice, slashing at Bakura with it. The man might have been aiming for Bakura’s arm, but because of the way Bakura jerked backwards to avoid being hit, he found himself with a deep gash on his chest instead. The man stood still for a moment, grinning, perhaps enjoying the moment. Bakura, however, ignored the searing pain and brought his own blade up, stabbing the man in his middle. He twisted it, and then ripped it out sideways, the man falling heavily to the sandy ground.
The whip-man had gotten off of his horse and when Bakura had a chance to turn around, he kicked Bakura directly in the stomach. Bakura doubled over, and the man kneed him in the face. The other man got off his horse and the two spent a little time kicking Bakura sharply. One picked up Bakura’s fallen weapon, holding it against his throat. He smirked and said something, but Bakura hadn’t been able to hear.
In fact, that was all Bakura could remember.
Next thing Bakura knew, he was standing. More cuts had been added to his collection, his body ached, but both the men and their horses were slaughtered around him. His blade was back in his hand, blood staining its tip and his hands and… everything. The sand was wet and crimson. Bakura looked around, wondering what the hell had happened, looking for anybody who might have been the one to kill them. He only saw his own horse, which seemed to have patiently stood there. Bakura, wincing at the pain, made his way over to his horse, patting its neck, saying some soothing things to it before pulling himself up.
Now with a look of fury on his face, Bakura grabbed the reins, completely ignoring the pain now, and rode swiftly towards the house. Rei. If anything happened to her, he swore he would make up for it. And if those bastards decided to try and steal her, Bakura would make sure they didn’t die. No, death would be what they would beg for after what Bakura would do to them.
Approaching the house, Bakura jumped off of his horse and burst through the front door, and the first thing he saw was a flash of fabric in one of the back windows. He ran forward; to catch them, make them pay, when he slipped. Wincing as he landed painfully on his back, where he would later find there were various lashes from a whip, and sat there for a dazed moment. Slowly he turned his head to look at what he had slipped on. Blood… Did that mean…? Oh, gods, there was Rei. What had they done to her?

Bakura brought the food in, sighing and mumbling a little to himself, and went over to Rei. She looked beautiful, despite her new injuries and whatnot. He had very little sleep when Rei had left, and seeing her sleeping there made him tired. But he was telling himself that if he fell asleep, something bad might happen. He might have another bad dream and really choke Rei this time. He would just have to cope with his insomnia for now and stay awake; there was no way he trusted himself around Rei. Placing a hand on her cheek, he sighed slightly before getting up to go attend to other things.

Bakura paused when he heard that and smiled faintly, before continuing with his work. Ryou rubbed his temples, closing his eyes. His head hurt, a lot. He wondered if he could get some kind of pain killer without it being something weird, like crocodile dung mixed with monkey spit and spread in between his toes. Okay, maybe it wouldn't be that extreme, but he knew a lot about ancient Egypt from his father, and he knew they had some weird remedies. But still, his head hurt a lot. It had been hurting a lot lately.
