Toby answered. Within the last 15 minutes, he had begun cooking.
"Hey," he said. "Join us?" They could talk while they cooked and ate.

"Gnocchi."
Dari liked gnocchi when they were made properly. It would be a treat for him to warm up tomorrow.
"You can squish them if you want."
Toby washed his hands and went back to rolling out the pasta while Maia manned the stove. He demonstrated how to do it, just a little press with a fork, and stepped over for Cody to take over that station. It'd get done faster.
"Okay, so what is this about a knife?"

What? Gnocchi? He'd never made that before. Cody smiled slightly and took the fork. Squish them?
"Dari cut himself open the other day and I panicked."
Maia looked over to Cody. Her lips pursed. "I hate when he does that," she muttered.

"Ohhh, oh oh, okay." Toby nodded. "Yeah, he has to purge to not get any bigger. It was more important way back when, but it's still a good idea."
He wasn't going to bring up the whole immortality thing.

"I thought he was going to die," Cody said. "It was horrible." He paused and looked to Toby. "I can't ever be the reason Dari feels like that."

"No. He knew what he was getting into when he started dating a human." Lori had even warned him.

Cody turned a glare on Toby. "He told me he'll never want anyone else. He'll be alone, for all those years. And he'll be unhappy. For the rest of forever." He frowned, fretting. "Isn't there some magic fairy trick? I don't care what happens to me, as long as he's happy."

"You don't want to be fairy-immortal," Toby said. He looked up at the cabinets and then at Cody. "You have to stay in the ground until you escape, and then you're an old man."
He sighed then.
"You don't want to be a werewolf. Or a vampire. There's a lot of suffering involved in either, granted it is in different ways."

Cody sighed. He prodded at a gnocchi with his fork. "I hate this," he said. "Dari's going to be unhappy the rest of my life, and afterward."

"No, he's gotten better," Toby said. "The zoo helped, I think. He gets over things, given enough time." The death of his One True Love, maybe not, but he wasn't about to tell Cody that. Either that or Dari would find another One True Love. As he'd learned, that could happen.

Cody looked to Toby skeptically. "A little bit," he agreed, "But it's not something a trip to the zoo's going to fix..." He shook his head.
Maia looked over. She frowned at Toby, and then at Cody. "We could ask Lori," she suggested.

Toby nodded. All he knew about was the basics. Lori would know if they had any other choices.
"Yeah, sure. I can ask him for you, Cody. I could give him your number, but if Dari hears you he'll lose his s**t."

"And how should I tell him to contact you?" Toby asked. He was honestly curious, not scornful. Waiting until Dari had to work an overnight was a good idea, but he didn't work them often. "He could hear through a phone. I'd suggest learning Elvish but he already knows it. Unless we had a mission or you were both at HQ and he was across the building, I can't see you not getting caught."
