"It's my favorite season," Cody admitted. "I always look forward to Halloween most out of all the holidays." He loved the chilly weather, the colors, the harvest.
Cody closed his eyes, trying, briefly to imagine more colors. "You're right," he said. "But I imagine one of the ones you see is a strange mix of purple and green."
"Stop worrying," he added, giving Dari a smile. " be perfect."

"I haven't experienced an autumn properly," Dari admitted. "I'm pretty good at Halloween, though, what with the shape-shifting and makeup." They'd have to do something special for Halloween!
"Oh, I'm not worried. I'm excited. It almost like we're already married, though. At least I think that's why I haven't brought it up."

"We'll do all the things," Cody promised. "We can pick apples, go on a hay ride, make pies, jump in leaves..." He smiled at him. "We can watch scary movies! What would you like to do for Halloween?" He asked.
He paused. If Dari hadn't been nervous about the wedding... "What's bothering you?" He asked.

Dari smiled and nodded. That sounded like fun! Their first Halloween would be very special.
His smile disappeared slightly when Cody asked what he was worried about, though.
"Nothing to worry yourself about."

"It is, though. It's upsetting you. And see, I make it my business to make sure my love is happy," Cody said. He looked at Dari, concerned. "I love you," he said.

Dari lifted Cody'shand and kissed the back of it. "I love you too."
He was ignoring the rest of it, though.

Dari was avoiding the subject. Cody decided to drop it. "Finish your dinner," he suggested, moving his plate back in front of him. He took a bite.

Dari blinked and turned back to his plate. His smile slowly faded. He continued to push it around his plate.

A few days later, Cody was still concerned about Dari. Without calling, he arrived at Toby's house and knocked on the door.
Maia answered. She looked worried, but offered a smile to Cody. "Dari's downstairs painting," she said. "Do you want me to go get him?"
"Nah. I'll go," Cody said.

Dari was, in fact, downstairs painting. It wasn't anything telling, really. It was abstract, at least to outside eyes. The shapes suggested something, but declined to tell exactly what.
He heard Cody come in.
"Hello, love." His back was to Cody, and as such his voice was cheery but his expression was entirely emotionless.

"Let's go to the zoo," Cody chimed, as soon as Dari spoke. He went over to him and wrapped his arms around him. "The butterfly house, the bat house, whatever you like! I'll buy you a funny hat with animal ears on it."

"Sure," Dari said with a nod. He forced a smile, the same way he'd had to in his natural form. "Just let me finish this part."

"Okay," Cody's forced cheeriness was waning. He put a hand to Dari's cheek and stroked it. "While you do that, you can tell me what's been bothering you these last few days."

"We're not in public," Cody pointed out. "Tell me, love. I can help if you let me. I hate that something's bothering you this much and I haven't been able to do a thing about it." Taking Dari out didn't seem to help any. Being cheesy didn't either. Nor telling equally cheesy jokes.
