"It's a lot more convenient. I'd rather go and buy fish at the grocery store than sit there and hope to catch one on my own. Modern conveniences." He took another sip of coffee.
"Sure, sounds like a plan. You can pick cheese, if you want. In that little drawer in the middle. No Parmesan." So he wouldn't have to think about what he wanted in them.

"I could teach you to fish," she offered. "It's a lot more exciting my way than sitting waiting for a fish to take a nibble." She considered this, "Do grocery store fish taste as good as fish you can catch?" she asked. It did sound easier, not having to catch them all the time.
She got the eggs out and set them on the counter, then looked for cheese. She picked up a block of orange cheese before heading over to Toby. She wasn't sure about the others. "Is this good?"

"Humans aren't made to catch fish with their hands. Or their mouths. Some people can do it if they've practiced a long time. Fresh fish tastes the same. The fresher the better."
Toby cracked the eggs and began to mix, just assuming Maia wanted two eggs rather than three. He pulled out a knife and began to cut the cheese into slices. A block wasn't going to help anyone. "Good choice," he agreed with a nod.

"No," Maia agreed. Humans were pretty useless with their mouths. Flat, rounded teeth prevented catching anything properly. "When I have money, I'll buy one to see. This place isn't near the ocean though, so I doubt it's very fresh."
"When I learn to cook, can we make something together? It'd be fun."

Toby was slowly waking up due to interaction that had been entirely undesirable at first. Sometimes he just needed a kick in the pants to start functioning.
"Not as fresh as it could be for sure. Where I used to live, you could get fish just off the pier they came in on." The lightly-seasoned eggs sizzled as he poured them into the pan.
"Yeah, sure. Any time." He paused. "Almost any time."

"Where did you live?" Maia asked, curious. Getting fish as soon as they were caught, he'd lived somewhere near the ocean. "Well, not when you're busy or anything. I meant when you've free time." She didn't want to distract him from work, his job was important.
She watched the eggs sizzle.

"The east coast," Toby responded. He'd also lived down south, and then here out west. Maia wasn't asking about those times, though. He produced a spatula from a nearby drawer, loosened the egg and tilted the pan, waited a moment, and then loosened the edges to flip it. Another little wait and the fillings went on and cooked for another little while. "Sure." Crepes. He'd bet she'd like crepes. The omelet was folded and made it to a plate which he offered to Maia. Clearly he had done this before. He was a man very confident and comfortable in his surroundings.
"Do you want something to drink?" He'd bet she wouldn't like coffee, though.

Toby was really an excellent cook, wasn't he? Maia could tell just by watching that he knew what he was doing. "Thank you," she smiled at him and took the plate offered to her. "It looks delicious." She'd have to learn how to make them.
"Water's fine," she said. "I can get it, if you'd show me where the cups are?"

"The cabinet closest to the fridge," Toby offered with a smile, nodding toward it over his shoulder. He began on his own omelet then. Really she had made a good choice. He was just also aware that it'd been entirely by chance. If she really wanted to cook, though, she'd learn.
"That thing on the front of the fridge, the hole. There's two paddles. Hold your cup opening-up and push it into the one on the left for ice, and on the right for water."

Maia set her omelet down on the counter and went to fetch a glass. She did as instructed: it was simple enough. She filled her glass with water and headed back to Toby to watch. "I've always wondered about cooking," she said. "My mother used to, but I never learned. I told you about that though."
She sipped at her water, watching.

Toby nodded. "Both of my parents cooked. Mom was better. It was back in a time when women weren't really expected to do much else, after the war." He shrugged. "Besides, I've had a lot of practice."
He put his breakfast on a plate and gestured toward the dining table with it. His coffee cup came back into his other hand. Would she like to sit and have breakfast with him?

"Dad didn't cook. He was more anti anything to do with humans than my mother was. She bought our house and everything." She'd never known why her father had been so firm that she avoid humans, but her mother had agreed most of the time.
She picked up her plate and smiled. "Lets eat."

Toby nodded and headed for the table, sitting down in his usual seat at the head of it. Dari perked up and peered through the doorway. Was it safe? It seemed so. He wasn't sure how Maia had known what to do, but good for her!
"A lot of entities are anti-human, the same way that a lot of humans are anti-entity, but of course there are exceptions." Like all of the FBPI staff and their connections worldwide. He cut apart his omelet with his fork and took a bite. Yes, Maia had made a good choice.
Toby almost brought up Maia getting her own place and if she had thought about where it might want to be, but caught himself. Maia didn't seem to like that at all, ever. Instead he posed a different conversation: "We'll go down to see if your ID came in today before you go to class."

"Dari, come on," Maia invited with a smile. She'd noticed the alien peering in. "Toby made omelets!" She cut hers into pieces with her fork and took a bite. She swallowed before speaking. "I think it was because something happened. He was so angry, I don't know if he just hated them, or maybe they ran them out of their old home or something. Like they did me. They would've killed me if you guys hadn't found me first." It was reasonable to think some thing similar had happened, wasn't It?
"Really? Great! Then I'll be able to get my phone and everything." She took another bite, chewing and swallowing before saying, "This is really good!"

Dari could be heard getting up and came into the dining room, taking his usual place next to Toby's right hand.
Killing, Toby thought, would have been the best-case scenario. He thought that lifelong torture and/or experimentation were much worse than death. So was a kidnapping and life serving some a*****e. None of that was remotely appropriate to relay, however.
"Hopefully. I mean, we have a direct line in with the folks who offer federal IDs so it usually only takes a day or two. Once you have an ID, everything gets easier. As far as the world is concerned, you're an average human being with all of the same right as anyone else." Well. Sexism aside.
