Little Indigo Kinetic Dream 3.14 Ugh. I am considering unplugging the damn landline. We had to get it because of the DSL...so I figured, hey! Let's get a cheap phone and people can call us! The only calls we get are wrong numbers and telemarketers...for other people. Like just now. The phone was ringing, and I knew it wasn't for me so I was just going to let it ring. Nooo. It rang for like, 5 minutes straight. So I answered. Me: Hello? Them: Hello. Uhm. Who is this? Me: What th...Who is THIS? You called me! Them: Gee, I must have the wrong number.. Me: Yeah, if you aren't looking for a Megan, or a Josh--you are lost. Them: Oh...I am sorry... Sounds like my phone problem. sweatdrop I'm still getting calls from people out in Colorado or Montana asking for 'David', and I've just started getting some calls from spanish speaking people and have to tell them, through a very rough translation that "____ isn't here, this isn't his telephone." ...I still haven't caught the new guy's name. sweatdrop When we first got my cell phone, I got some really bizarre calls at strange times. Usually, it was during the day, and people were looking for a Steve to come fix their bathroom/kitchen plumbing stuffs. But then one time there was this lady who was insistent that she had the right number...at 3:00 a.m. EST. She called a total of 6 times within a 20 minute time-frame. I eventually had enough:Quote: Lady: Hello, is Sarah there? Me: No, she isn't. Just like she wasn't here the last 5 times you called my phone. This is not Sarah's phone. This is not Sarah's number. This is my phone and my number, and I'd really appreciate it if you'd get the right number for 'Sarah' and stop insisting that she's here when she obviously isn't. Lady: No, no. You're the one who's mistaken. I know this is Sarah's number. She gave it to me just a couple of weeks ago. I know my daughter wouldn't lie to me. I bet you're just a thief who stole her cell phone! Me: Look, lady, I hope you understand that you're actually admitting that your daughter is a stupid idiot who would let someone steal her phone and not ask the phone company to turn it off. You are also insinuating that I'm a petty thief with no common sense, because only stupid thieves would accept incoming calls from a stolen cell phone. Lady: I demand to speak to Sarah right now! Me: For the last time, Sarah is not here, nor will she ever be! It is 3:00 am in my area, meaning that you woke me up in the middle of the night, in my own room. So unless your 'Sarah' is a ghost or a lesbian *****, she is not here. Will you please drill that fact into your head and realize that your daughter may have given you a.... GASP... false number?! Lady: No, Sarah would neve- Me: To be honest, if I had a mother like you, who would keep a poor high school student up at 3:00am just because she had a wrong number, I would give you a false number, too. Furthermore, lady, if you call my phone again, I'll call the police for harrassment, and they'll track down your number, get your information, and get a hitman to kill you. I am just that powerful. I really hate ignorant people... gonk You should have omitted police and hitman and mentioned me... you also should have also replaced "kill you" with "devour your family tree and wipe your hometown off the map"... Seriously, these failures on your part wound me.

3.14 Peppermint Elf What the hell is up with the price of nitemare headbands?? eek gonk I thought it was bad enough when I bought mine at 180k, but now they're 240k??? Jesus. How did they get so expensive, any way? I remember I bought mine for 25k...and I paid like 5k more than I should have just because I was being nice to the girl. I'm wondering that too... how the ******** can a renewable resource like nitemare headbands be worth more than letters from two years ago?

I think they were made even more rare after the admins rearranged the giftbox items. That, and events in general seem to be less frequent per person; combined with ever-increasing numbers of people and the popularity of the item... PRICE EXPLODEY. Do pink links even exist any more? I seriously haven't gotten one in over a year. Yeah, I got one a few days ago.

Dr. Fomite Ho's**t. I just opened the Comcast home page to check if I had any new email, and what should I see but an advert for "Me and My Katamari". Oh, how it warms my heart. Mmmmm... more Katamari music... more rolling... more of the king's not so casual abuse of his son...

Peppermint Elf It's not easy to be Native American... you gotta build a casino so your people are no longer living in below poverty conditions, then spend the next who knows how many years fighting like hell to make sure the government doesn't get control over it, your land, your sovereignty, and finally pay you back for illegally buying up your land at gunpoint. stare You forgot the bullshit about the BIA embezzling money from natural resources mined from res land, blatant mismanagement of records, and the breaking of treaties as recently as just 2 or 3 years ago. I love the idea of social crusaders talking about the idea of black reparations for wrongs in the past to people who aren't still alive and ignoring the ongoing bullshit right under their eyes...

Native Americans are definitely ignored the most today. Learned about that a lot in sociology and applied anthro. It explains a lot as to why they're the group with the highest level of alcoholism. What is there left to turn to? sad

My favorite reason for rejecting our sovereignty: Because they live in America, they should be subject to all it's laws and taxations.

It explains a lot as to why they're the group with the highest level of alcoholism. What is there left to turn to? sad That's only a small factor in the alcoholism, IMO... First of all, the NA physiology lacks certain enzymes that aid in breaking down alcohol... thus, the impact of alcohol on their system is far more powerful and long lasting. This effectively becomes a powerful predisposition towards alcoholism. Second, as a culture they had no cultural understanding of it when it was first traded to them and thus no social mechanisms to deal with it. And lastly... in addition to your depression factor, insanely cheap beer is available on many rez. This was more or less a blatant attempt to keep them drunk, happy, and ineffective. There's other factors, but I think these are the three prime ones. In related news, Minoriteam is a slice of rancid a**.

It explains a lot as to why they're the group with the highest level of alcoholism. What is there left to turn to? sad It was worse in the past, but yes... lots of alcoholism left. I really don't blame them. Many tribes in the midwest are living below poverty levels and in near 3rd world conditions. You'd drink too. sad
My parents used to live on the Oneida reservation when I was very young. The conditions were until 20 years ago... quite impoverished. I barely remember it. No one gave 2 shits as to how to help or even wanted to. Now that we're finally prospering and starting to have Nation run companies/industries, they're finally paying attention and trying to stick their thumbs in our pies. NY state has been running in a deficeit for years. So instead of actually trying to make serious changes in how efficiently they run things, they're trying to take the easy way out by trying to take what we have.
The Oneidas have been donating to schools, charities, and giving the local government help since the casino was built. When Katrina hit, the Oneidas donated $1 million, we employ thousands of residents, and bring much needed revenue. We're nothing but kind and generous to the local communities and we're still treated like s**t by them. I can say with all honesty that there are times when I'm nearly in tears from pure fustration at the attempts to totally abolish our way of life. Once, they tried to take our identities away from us by forcing us into schools and prohibiting us from speaking our language. Now, it seems they're trying to do it "legally" by stripping us of our ability to govern ourselves. It makes me sick.

But if the first were applied holistically, then wouldn't Asians too be more predisposed to alcoholism? I think they lack the enzyme to break it down well...which is why I get drunk off very little and stay sick for a long long time. I'm not all that familiar with physiological factors of alcoholism though, but I more so look at it through the whole psychological perspective. I think it's more so situational factors which place people at a higher risk for alcoholism...at least from looking at the demographics of alcoholics from what I've gathered from class. But definitely something interesting to look into for myself is there is a physiological cause behind it.
And as for a cultural aspect, I would imagine that wouldn't apply towards contemporary NA society? But then again, I don't know a whole lot about it [ie. what's taught from generation to generation].
But things like this interest me so much. surprised

Seriously, when you're currently living on the land that was once theirs, your right to whine is severely curtailed.

The conditions they were left in would make anyone (regardless of heritage) turn to drinking. A lot of what you're talking about reminds me of the case study of "arctic town" in Canada we learned about in applied anthro (one of the days I actually went xd ). Although America is good in certain aspects, it sorely lacks in other areas...and the public just turns away and blocks it out with superficial news. sad

But things like this interest me so much. surprised As I understand, it is only select portions of the asian population that lack the enzymes... like someone with a particularly strong Ainu heritage (who get roughly similar treatment in Japan to some of the NA... which makes an amusing counterpoint to the Japan, land of perfection theory so prevalent in the AMC) is going to have serious problems with it. The huge amounts of barley, rice, millet, and wheat easily available throughout Asia as well as an established agricultural base made for easily producable beers going back quite a long time. The huns had kumiss (fermented Yak's milk), and some wines. Also contributing to the asian ability to handle alcohol is the fact that the ability to interbreed somewhat with bordering cultures allowed them to acquire the trait... whereas the landlocked Native Americans had no such option. Then there's also the social constraints and expectations of the consumption of alcohol that come with having a culture used to alcohol and its effects. Confucianism is a powerful factor...
