xd If anything me and my GF will probably be together for a very long time without ever getting married, we don't beleive in it. Why do I need the church to validate that I love someone?

Well, in ireland, you need to get married to gain any inheritance rights, or visiting rights. If you're not married, even though you've been living together for years, you are treated as "strangers" for tax purposes. So, if you inherited, say a house, you'd have to sell it, to pay the tax.
As well as that, if you had kids and your girlfriend died, then unless she'd something stated in her will about you taking care of your own children, her parents would be awarded custody of your children. Fathers have no rights in our law. I've friends with kids. People just assume that they're fine, but they're not. Of course, we've no concept of a common-law marriage. Maybe it's different where the rest of you are.
