So my fiance called me about an hour ago. He was woken up at 4am because his mother's dog, Teddy, had peed blood in his sleep. So they wouldn't have to pay off another emergency vet bill, they waited till it was morning and took him to their normal vet clinic (Animal Medical clinic on Lion Parkway, Columbia, Tn). He couldn't call off work, so his mom called in late and explicitly told the vet NOT to let the dog out of the crate and that she didn't want ANYTHING to happen to him. "Don't worry. I'm a professional."
My fiance gets a call. The vet asst. took Teddy out of his crate, put him on one of their leashes (which is just a choke-rope lead), and took him OUTSIDE of the building to go to the bathroom.
1. He's at the vet because of bladder issues. Is it really a good idea to take a dog out when he was peeing blood? 2. The vet was told NOT to take him out of the crate for any reason. He's not leash trained. 3. Why outside of the building when they have a fenced in area in the back?
Needless to say, the asst lost control of the leash and he ran. Did they run after him? Only so many steps before giving up. So now random people in the Columbia, TN area are looking for a dark red-brown long-haired Chihuahua known by the name of
Teddy with
NO collar and a vet rope leash. He had his old collar on with a rabies tag.
My fiance alerted both vet clinics, humane society, and pound. They'll be putting an ad in the paper tomorrow morning, hopefully. They hope someone has found him and is taking care of him, hoping to find his owners.
I'm just thoroughly pissed at the vet clinic and the vet asst for doing something against an owner's wish. Why would you go against the owner's verbal words "don't take him out of the crate for anything except to evaluate him" did they not understand?

So more information, there was no trace of the dog anywhere. No footprints in the mud, no pieces of fur, no leash, nothing. The conclusion has been drawn that someone stole the dog inside the clinic...
My fiance has posted flyers in a 25 mile radius, contacted all vet clinics in that general radius, and made personal visits to the humane center. I've suggested he make a facebook note or group and having the word spread via the internet as well.
