Before all this the background was very sketchy and ill-defined. Just look at the debates that rage about whether or not the Emperor truly sits on the Golden Throne. (spoiler: he sits there)

Well, the Primarchs are oft described as being giants compared to regular Astartes. And some of these are truly gigantic. Of course, they all suffer from artist scaling, as on some covers they are shown as being of regular size, while on others they are giant.
Magnus the Red though was a cyclopean giant of a man.
