Sounds like you had a few uber-exciting days there, Summer! blaugh I don't know if I could handle having to wait that long to find out if I got a job or not.

You're on a lappy, right? Sounds like maybe the psu died, but whatever it is, hopefully it's something fixable. 3nodding Thank goodness for old compies!

UPDATE: (Some people might say yay, but I'm sure a few people reading are groaning because I might be about to write another huge thesis-like post.)

Anyway, the computer died for good. It turns out it was the motherboard (logicboard) which stuffed up. This was the second motherboard I went through in a year and it was going to cost approximately $1500 to replace and fix... No thanks.

So I decided to buy a new laptop (I was already thinking it was time to upgrade but this decided it for me). Anyway, I didn't just buy the cheapest one there, rather I bought the one which was the prettiest (I didn't want a black one and my previous one was white, so I wanted the silver this time). It also happened to be the one with good 3D rendering video card etc. etc...

The comp guy went through his big spiel about all the computers, but I'd already decided on the 'pretty' one (which also happened to be the 2nd most expensive. Oops).

I asked about getting a student discount on the price, but he said that their store didn't do it, but if I went to another store I could get the discount (which was $500 cheaper). But this would have caused other consequences (as the service guy who took a look at my computer wasn't going to charge for looking if I bought a computer from his store).

So I managed to get my father (who came with me) to foot the $500 extra and I only paid the student price (I don't quite know how I managed that, but I'm not complaining).

Then, to make it better, the service guy took my old computer and the new one and transferred everything across, so it is as if I'm still on the same old computer, except I'm not. And he didn't charge for that as well.

It turned out he had to take out the hard disk of my old computer to transfer everything across, as it was touch and go whether my old computer would start or not.

So I have a spiffy new computer and I didn't lose anything and didn't have to transfer anything across either.

To make it better, I will now probably be able to play GoPets on this computer (it is a Mac), so I don't have to sneak on at work anymore. xd

I'm happy. I've just got to explore the stuff that wasn't on my old one. But my old computer isn't much better than spare parts, as it would need the new logicboard to be useable.

And Citrinia: I'm not handling the wait very well. I keep thinking about what happens if I get rejected. I'm going to be so disappointed.

Ugh. Now I've gone and written another huge post. Sorry about that. I promise I'll try not to do it again. It is just that so much happened in the last few days.

Thank you for taking the time to read it.

Whooohooo for new lappie, Summer! *insert party icon here*

I've had to replace both my harddrives and two vid cards within the last year. sweatdrop I need this sucker to hold on for about another year until I build a new one; I want a quad-core cpu next, and prices for that won't be reasonable 'til then (although by then 8-core will prolly be available...). xp

OMGosh that video is priceless, Elie!
The poor dog!

I had a few problems with the new computer's battery- I used it at uni the day after I bought it and the battery only lasted for2 hours. I had downloaded a battery optimisation update the day before, but it hadn't seemed to fix it up.
So I rang the service guy and he said to test it out again by charging it up overnight and then timing how long it took to run it down.

It took just over 4 hours this time. Which is much better than the 2 hours (but not as good as my previous one which could last up to 6 hours at the start). So I rang him and updated and he said that that is around the average for these comps, but to keep him updated on how long it takes to run down over the weekend. I'm just glad it improved so much.
A 2 hour battery would be insane bad.

Quad-Core is that twice a bettter as dual-core? I've never heard of quad-core or 8-core.

My old, old computer (the one before the one before this one. xd ) would last about a second on battery and would then shut off. And the power adapter went a bit shonky too so it would cut out at random times so I'd lose whatever I was doing. Great stuff. rolleyes

Yay! It is so much fun. The sales guy (for they invariably are male) speaks at about a bazillion miles a minute saying stuff about the specifications of the computer and you have no idea what he is talking about, but you don't want to have to stop him every nanosecond asking what the word he just said means, so you nod your head and try to look 'hip with the 'puter lingo'.

And then you end up buying the prettiest one anyway.

Great times... lol

Dual-core processors have 2 processors in the CPU; quad-cores have 4, which means quadruple the processing power. *drools* Quads were just starting to be released this year, so they're still big bucks. This is a news release from early last year, but the info about quads is well explained for you non-techies. cool

My 5-yo lappie only has a 2 hour battery; the DH picked it out on impulse, and then decided he didn't want to pay for an extra battery. xp This is why it's always best to do some research *before* you go to buy a new compie, and then ask lots of questions when you're in the store! Too often those sales guys are thinking of their commissions, and not necessarily about what you want/need.

I didn't even look at what the prize was for my previous roll- I'm just so happy to be rolling again! rofl

As for buying the comp- dad's one is the same model and it is very good and it has what I want on it, so I'm really not phased. I know that they are a good model and if not, I'll just complain to my service guy and he can get it fixed up. razz

But I completely agree with you about asking lots of questions- I was very lucky Dad was there as he asked the right questions and knew what he was doing. I would have been so intimidated and flustered if I was by myself.
(Computer shops seem to do that to me rolleyes )

Bleh... I swear I rolled on that post, but it must have disappeared in the preview... Although it hasn't done that before.

lol summer! xd heart

also... aniima PMed me saying she was temp banned as a precautionary measure due to the hacking at Subeta.org. eek gonk heart She also says luckily her account and items weren't affected tho.

http://www.gaiaonline.com/journal/?mode=view&p=9991027 (list of users affected)

It seems that Subeta was hacked, and the list of users and their passwords were posted in public. So Gaia banned everyone that had the same username temporarily (in case someone tried to cross-reference that list).

This might be a good opportunity to everyone that uses the same user name and passwords on all sites to consider changing them? eek
