Aethos nodded again. "And ... pray tell me ... what is her name? Does she travel alone?"
They turned a corner and headed down another hallway, towards the eastern part of the castle, just as Rhea had predicted the night before.

"Aerin is her name," Lin murmured she could see that tumble of fiery hair and her temper to boot, "She came to the ranch with a man named Caranthir."
Who was more or less her opposite except he was just as mysterious. Though sometimes she wondered if the two weren't going to end up together. They reminded her of a certain couple back when she was a child, who was now happily married to each other.

Aethos stopped in his tracks and closed his eyes, breathing slowly and deeply.
Rhea watched him for a moment, her brow furrowing slightly with anxiety. "Aethos-sola ... are you all right?" she murmured. "Aethos-sola?

Lin stopped and looked at Aethos, "Is something wrong?"
She only told him honestly what he wanted to know. Unless.... no way she thought to herself. There was no way he could know Aerin, no one was that epically lucky, or unlucky depending on the situation.

Aethos took a deep breath and opened his eyes again, and though it was clear that he was trying not to let any emotion show, there were tears in the corners of his eyes.
"Nothing," he said softly, starting to walk again, faster this time. "Nothing ... or at least ... nothing that anything can be done about."
Rhea glanced at Lin, then followed after him again quickly. "Aethos-sola, what is it?" she asked him. "Do you know this woman?"

If it weren't for the fact that was the first piece of real emotion (though it was hidden almost perfectly if it weren't for the tears shining), Lin would have banged her head against the nearest wall. She hurried along as she shrugged to Rhea.
She had no clue and at the moment due to her shortness she was just trying to keep up.

Aethos still didn't speak, but only continued walking. Partway down the hall, however, they passed a servant, and Aethos stopped and took the man by the arm.
"Send a message to my father," he said, his tone urgent. "Tell him that my sister is still alive."
The servant's eyes grew wide, but he bowed without questioning the first sola. "Right away, Aethos-sola," he said; and he hurried off in the opposite direction.

Now Lin didn't believe in destiny, or fate, or any of that crap. Well she might believe in soul mates (but she would so deny it if asked). So when she came to the realization that she probably had just contact with a princess from another far away country she wondered if she should perhaps rethink her opinions on at least fate.
Because really, this was becoming to be a bit much.
Of course there was something morbidly interesting about the idea that Carathir had been all this time teasing... bugging a fiery princess who more often than not gave him that look that he was being stupid.
"She's...." Lin trailed off.
It kind of hit her, Aethos-sola must be very old, because Aerin was supposed to very old.

Even Rhea was taken by surprise, though she had always been certain that there had been something very different about Aerin. This however was not what she would have expected.
But she had only one question.
"Does Caranthir know?" she asked Aethos. "About who she is, I mean?"
Aethos looked at Rhea over his shoulder as he headed down the hall once more, his pace quickening still more. "It was he who brought her from here," he replied. "I never knew if she survived. I knew I would never see her again, and I thought I was prepared for that ... but the ignorance ..."
He shook his head. "Father will be glad to know she is alive, also. Though we will never see her again, the knowledge that she is alive and safe ... is enough."

Lin's mind was pretty much going a mile a minute piecing together everything she knew about Aerin. Which wasn't a lot mind you, she only knew a bit and that had been largely from Carathir's teasing.
Carathir took her away, so that would explain why they had been traveling together, but Sir Valdemar said there was a time Carathir didn't travel with anyone...
Then there was the fact Aerin hadn't slept in who knows how many centuries (though she was sure Carathir knew).
"Survived?" Lin didn't dare ask out right what had happened, it was obviously something bad if she couldn't return here.

Aethos was silent for a moment, and then he murmured, "She saved my life ... I was ... we were out on the battlefield, and I was injured ... Laur, the Great Dragon, was attacking us ... attacking me ... and without thought for her own life, she saved me ... but at the cost of her own."
He grew silent, wistful, as they continued down the seemingly neverending hallway.
"Though her body recovered, her mind did not," he murmured. "Caranthir ... I know not whence he came, but he knew of a way to heal her ... but it required taking her away. She ... was still unconscious when he took her ... from the time that she saved me until the time when she must have woken in your land, she knew nothing of what happened ..."
Rhea was impressed. Not only because of what Aethos said had happened, but that Aerin was still with Caranthir ... she knew if she had woken up after an abnormally long sleep in the custody of a complete stranger ... well, that stranger might not be long for this world.

Lin wondered absently this was the reason why Aerin had such an aversion to sleep. She could kind of see it if she had been in a coma for so long to not want to sleep.
"So that's how the two ended up traveling together...."
Though she couldn't understand why Aerin couldn't return, but she was sure there was a good reason for that. Actually she was surprised Caranthir was still in one piece.

Aethos looked at Lin. "Tell me about her," he requested. "What is she like? What does she look like? What is her personality?"
Though he was still trying to hide his emotion, his green eyes sparkled brightly with sadness, excitement, and tears as he asked about the sister that he had not seen for so many years.

"Aerin is really nice, she may come off as a bit gruff but she's just really serious about her work. Granted, Caranthir teasing her doesn't help matters much... those two are close, but until now it was hard to figure out their relation to each other."
Because honestly there were days she wondered how Aerin put up with Caranthir, not that she minded Caranthir, he was an nice guy. It's just there were times he needed to be whack upside the head.
"She's very pretty with her wavy fire hair, it's long like to her shoulders. Not that most people could tell when she's wearing her cloak, she likes wearing with the hood up."
Like a certain someone she knew had done so many times in the past. There was irony that she had taken Aragost's old room, she had been just as mysterious. Well she still was.
"With freckles, that was the other thing that struck me, were her freckles it makes her look younger."
Not that any one would assume she was younger.
"She has a reputation among the Four Lands as being a Dragon Slayer, but her past has always been mysterious, and she has been around for a long while. So a lot of stories sort of sprung up, like how her hair became that colour because she fought so many dragons... that sort of thing."

Aethos listened intently, a smile flitting about his lips. "It has been a very long time since she left here," he told Lin. "In twelve years, it will have been four hundred years since she left us. But ..."
His face grew troubled. "It sounds as if she has changed. When she was young, she was so sweet and outgoing ... nothing could keep her down." He smiled. "But since the beginning, she was always a beauty."
He led them through a doorway to a row of cells. "Here, your friend is here," he murmured, leading them down towards the end of the row.
