"No," Ulani murmured with a sad smile. "He didn't. Though it makes me wonder why he came here in the first place. Still, I can't pretend to understand his mind. Even Rhea tries not to."

"Though I think she gets more curious as time goes by," Ulrich chuckled. "Just you wait. Someday."

Lin chuckled at that, "Someday she'll try? I remember when he was this huge mystery. Well, he still is a mystery, but when he was trying not to get attached to everyone, he just made me curious."

And why not? Miyu thought he was the nicest person (and Lin had gotten a taste of his scary demeanor) and he obviously could laugh even though he would deny anything happened.

Ulani smiled. "Well, he has definitely become a large part of all of our lives," she murmured, "no matter what he may claim, or what he might try to claim or do. He has touched all of us forever."

Interesting way to put it, when she thought about the fact that Lin, though human, was also immortal - they thought, at least - as well as Feng and Ryu.

Lin grinned at that, it was amazing remembering the first time she was introduced to Aragost or ever heard of him.

"And we wouldn't want it any other way," Lin murmured remembering what Timaeus said about what it was like after Aragost left for that small while.

It gave her warm feelings.

The conversation continued for several hours until at last Ulani had to excuse herself to prepare dinner. It took more time than usual of late, simply because there were so many mouths to feed now, though she assumed that Feng and Ryu and Naida would be heading back to Aliya and Amdir's house for dinner.

It was just at that time that Niyana finally returned with the other three children. She had avoided the house for most of the day in an effort not to exacerbate Ruran's attitude, and she never knew when it was safe to return: but it was time to prepare dinner, and she would never let Ulani do so alone.

"We're back!" Ruque's voice rang out from the living room as the door opened and closed.

"Is Ruran still here?" Aras's voice asked right away after him.

"Nope! He had to go out," Feng replied hefting Naida up again, "We should be heading back to Aliya's."

Preferably before it was too late she added mentally.

"Indeed," Ryu nodded.

Besides Aliya probably heard by now and was probably worried.

"Go out?" Niyana asked, puzzles, as she joined everyone in the kitchen. "Go out where?"

"Celebor disappeared with him early this morning," Ulani explained. "I'm sure they'll be back soon enough, though. If not in time for dinner, then afterward. Celebor knows the area well."

"I can't help but wonder what they're doing, though," Ulrich commented, puzzled. "I mean, I know Celebor's punished Ruran before, but never for this long ..."

"Maybe this time he'll learn his lesson," Aras muttered darkly, folding her arms across her chest.

"Be nice," Lin supplied and winced when she realized she just sounded exactly like her mother, "He maybe a jerk but he's still your brother."

Feng giggled, "You sounded like mother for a moment.."

The look that Lin gave Feng told the mermaid she wasn't fond of that comparison.

"No, not until I have kids... and that'll be a long time," she added the last part under her breath.

Feng laughed a bit more before dragging her brother out, "See you all later!"

"Just because he's my brother, doesn't mean I shouldn't be glad he's being told to behave," Aras countered Lin, ignoring Feng's comment. "It will be good for him to learn that he's wrong when he does stuff like what he did to you. Because it was mean, and it was dangerous!"

She paused. "But then ... he's always been like that. He broke Kanis's leg, you know."

Kanis lowered her eyes self-consciously.

Lin shook her head, it was a pity that Ruran didn't care anything for his siblings, because to her it would be sad if her siblings never cared for her. Then again the whole thing had been messed up to begin with.

"Be it as it may, there's nothing wrong about being glad, especially when it comes to other people's safety, but... this is also for his safety as well."

Or what she was trying to express but having trouble doing so because she never had a sibling she didn't like (felt creeped out about sure but not dislike), was that Ruran was their brother and they needed to be worried about him as well. Though she supposed they wouldn't understand neither how much trouble Ruran could really get into if not restrained.

"Well maybe if he cared about something other than himself, we might care something about him too!" Aras exclaimed self-righteously. "He's gotta stop hurting other people!"

"Aras, please," Kanis said softly, her brow furrowing anxiously. "Don't start more arguments ..."

Aras looked at Kanis in surprise. "You're the one he's worst to! Except for Mommy, he's really mean to Mommy ... but come on! He beats you up, he pushes you around, he calls you names - and you just let him! He's never going to stop that way!"

Kanis looked away. She just wanted to avoid conflict ... and it seemed sometimes that the best way to do that was to let Ruran do whatever he liked.

"Well... maybe she can't fight back," Lin pointed out, "You said that Corrah focused more on Ruran and has Ruran has shown he doesn't fight fair, not that life is fair, but he's far more violent than need be."

She shook her head a bit and placed a hand on each of the girls' shoulders.

"You're right Aras, Ruran has no right to, but sometimes people need help to defend themselves or to even tell a proper adult."

Though she didn't know if Ruran had been disciplined previously for bothering Kanis.

"Look, he's your brother, even if he is an a**," Lin told Aras softly, "But you have to prove to be a better person than him and look beyond the a** he is. Most importantly, you're family, and you all have to look out for each other."

Aras looked up at Lin. She would much rather look out for her sister ... Kanis didn't deserve to be picked on like that, and it wasn't that she couldn't look after herself, it was just that she wouldn't. Still, Lin was asking her so sincerely ...

"Kanis never tells anyone," she said quietly. "And when Ruran broke her leg, Corrah didn't even do anything, he just took Kanis and took care of her but Ruran didn't get punished at all, it was just as if it was all right for him to do that!"

Lin decided it was best not to say a few choice words about Corrah seeing as Kanis liked the guy (for reason beyond Lin but she would respect that).

"Well, if Ruran does it here everyone will be on him, no one hurts family and you guys even though it's not really by blood and even if it was, its distantly so, in a way all these people are your family, and me too of course."

She grinned at Kanis.

"So you'd trust me to help you right?"

Kanis looked at Lin almost suspiciously, but she slowly nodded, rubbing one foot against the back of her other leg. "I guess," she murmured softly, though she had only known Lin for being in her presence for a grand total of about five minutes.

"Of course we do," Aras said brightly. "She's not a cheater, and she's a good fighter!"

Ruque looked a little uncomfortable, though. He wasn't sure what was going on, but it seemed as though they were being asked to make a decision ... between their brother, or Lin ... and he didn't know what to think of that.
