ragingtofu Designated Hero Y'know what the most ridiculous thing is? Designated Hero People actually buy this stuff. :/ Then again, if people didn't buy it with real cash, there'd be none on the market to buy with Gaia gold. Gaia has to make money somehow to keep the server up.

I bought this with Gaia Gold. Though I am not ashamed to say I have bought stuff off the Cash Shop directly. Gaia is giving some benefits to those who want to support the site, so I say let them.

That argument kind of falls flat when you consider that in 2003, they were taking donations (and the letters were called "Donation Letters") specifically for server upkeep while the few people that ran the site worked other jobs.
Now they're called Monthly Collectibles, Gaia is described as a business, they have corporate offices, and you can buy Gaia Cash cards at Target.
It is not a little start-up, small role-playing community website. It is a business, and is being run by a business, and they want to make money because it's profitable, not to keep the site alive like they were trying to do six years ago.
I'm not condemning people who pay for stuff. If people want to support the website, that's cool. If they want to buy stuff to resell it for gold, that's cool too. Honestly, I just thought it was funny that those two posts came up one after the other, though I do think that the point of all the added paid content (however you want to say it) is for profit, not just upkeep.
*Stumbles off to actually be productive today.*

I agree. Quote the random Flintstone's appliance, "It's a living".

They make enough via ad-space and endorsements to keep the site running, I'm sure. MCs and Gaia Cash s**t are just cash cows, now.
Not that I blame them. Good marketing to a group of people who want to buy the stuff.
