If I had my way in Marching Band the whole show would be an oboe solo with marching band back up... But, unfortunately it hasn't happened yet. I play in percussion usually, sometimes I play clarinet... But I would rather play Theodor (my oboe). Marching season is such a drag for me. It is three months of separation from my oboe. It's just not fair. But, the upside is that being in percussion (well, being in pit or auxilery drumline *which I am) you don't have to do anything really. Plus I can sit around working on solo and ensable music and audition music while everyone is out marching.

    Really? I love marching season! It's so much fun, plus I get to be reunited with my saxophone. xd

    Although, there was a show I saw last year that had this amazing oboe solo in their ballad...I was just like, "Woah. This makes me feel really inadequate." xd

I totally agree Terra. Marching season is so much fun! The band becomes more like a family again before we tear at each others' throats for concert band auditions. Although I do miss the oboe. But hey, I can still play it outside of practice, can't I?
Oh, and on the topic of instument names, my oboe's is Nero.

    I NEED ENGLISH HORN REEDS! D= I'm doing pit orchestra this year, and the Cinderella music calls for both oboe and english horn. I've checked all the stores around here, and I can't find any...anybody know where I can find some good reeds online or something? The other oboe player gave me one...but it's horrible and dead and flat and ewwww.

Forrest music.

Here's the link for oboe family reeds. When I don't make my reeds, I buy them off Forrest ^_^

Forrests is good but you could also go to the L&L Music-Wind Shop in Gaithersburg - it's also the best place to get double reed instruments serviced in the DC metro area... link.

I played Bassoon in school last year, but my BD asked me to rejoin the trumpet section because I'm good, the section is small, and our two best players just graduated.

I was going to play both instruments, but now it's just trumpet.

I'm going to ask him if I can at least take the bassoon home and work on it in my spare time, just because I love it so much... I think it sounds reasonable, who here thinks he'll actually let me take it home?

Does anybody here play the Contra Bassoon?

I'd like to play one, but I don't think theres any place in my part of the world that would ever sell one. Does anybody know a good online store?

and it was the most amazing thing.. we got a 2 our band director thought we were going to get a 3 at best... but we were only two groups of our whole band to get a two... but it was so awesome because i would have never thought that we could do it

@saxysoul

Oh my god. Contras cost about $7,000 for a CHEAP one. A GOOD one costs about $15,000-$40,000. I'd like to start contra as well, BUT THEY ARE WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. The cheapest one I found online was an off brand for $7,449 with insurance it is $8,148.

I recommend borrowing a school instrument (if your school has one) instead.
Heh... my bassoon teacher told me once "If you want to get your own contra, forget about it. Borrow another person's instrument and get yourself a car."
Even he, who has played both bassoon and contra for 40 years borrows his friend's for concerts.
